Johann Strauss' timeless comic operetta is a wry exposé of 19th century Viennese society and features some of his most beloved waltzes and brilliant arias.
The story revolves around a practical joke instigated by Dr. Falke, Vienna's favorite party-master, as a mock revenge on his friend, Gabriel von Eisenstein. The action unfolds at a masquerade ball hosted by Prince Orlofsky, whose invitations are as exclusive and coveted as his famous directive, "Each to his own taste!"
Since its Viennese premiere in 1874, Die Fledermaus, written by "the Waltz King," Johann Strauss II, has been one of the most beloved of all operas. It was first heard in New York only a few months after its world premiere, and has been a staple of the opera repertory around the world ever since. Its timeless and light-hearted story of a friendly practical joke gone somewhat awry enchants audiences of all ages. Full of the froth of the Belle Epoque and containing some of Strauss' most appealing vocal melodies and whirling waltzes, it never fails to send people away with smiles on their faces!
NDSU Opera Theatre's production of Die Fledermaus will feature NDSU undergraduate and graduate students in all roles, and will be sung in English. We offer special group packages that include a pre-performance backstage tour as well as deeply discounted tickets for students and seniors.
