Kang to Present Faculty Recital

Cecilia Kang, Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the NDSU School of Music, will present a faculty recital and interdisciplinary lecture on Monday, March 18 in Beckwith Recital Hall.
The lecture, titled “Applications of Technology in Music Composition and Performance,” will take place on March 18 at 2 PM in Beckwith Recital Hall, the public is welcome to attend. Kang will be join by Mary Simoni, Dean of Humanities, Arts and Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY) and composer of Armé Arirang for Clarinet in A and iPad. Armé Arirang was composed for Kang and features a popular French Renaissance melody, L’hommeArmé, intertwined with Arirang, a well-known Korean folk song, representing the yearning for unification of the Korean peninsula. The composition is about East meets West, old meets new, and religion meets politics. The sound of the clarinet is processed using Open Sound Control (OSC). An iPad is wirelessly connected to the computer and communicates with the computer using the OSC protocol.
Armé Arirang will be performed in full at Kang’s faculty recital, March 18 at 7:30 PM in Beckwith Recital Hall; admission is free. Additionally, Kang will perform pieces by Finzi, Wanamaker, and Beethoven. She will be joined by Simoni on iPad, Susan Nagle, piano, Elise Buffet Nelson, cello, Matthew Patnode, saxophone, and Mike Coates, audio engineer.
