Katherine Noone joined the Division of Fine Arts in 2007. Dr. Noone is an assistant professor of practice in musical theatre, a faculty position that serves both the music and theatre departments. In this position, she teaches applied classical voice, applied musical theatre voice, vocal pedagogy, development of musical theatre, acting the song, directs the NDSU Musical Theatre Troupe and music directs the mainstage theatre department musical each spring. She has also been instrumental in bringing musical theatre guest artists to the department such as Broadway composer Andrew Lippa and Broadway performers Julia Morney and Becky Gulsvig.
Dr. Noone is an active performer appearing in principal and supporting roles in opera, musical theatre, and straight theatre, and is also a performer and teacher of swing dance. She has performed with Opera Omaha, Fargo Moorhead Opera, Act-Up Theatre, Minnesota State University-Moorhead Theatre, Minnesota State University Mankato Theatre’s Highland Summer Theatre, Nebraska Repertory Theatre, the Lofte Theatre, Theatre B, and the Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre. Favorite roles include Guenevere in Camelot, Lizzie in 110 in the Shade, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, and both stepsisters in La Cenerentola. She recently performed in a 5-star performance of Spring Awakening at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland with Act-Up Theatre.
Dr. Noone is a frequent recitalist and concert performer. She has appeared as a soloist with the Fargo Moorhead Symphony, the NDSU Baroque Festival, Fargo Moorhead Chamber Chorale, the Voices of Concord, and has served as the principal soloist at the First Church of Scientist in Fargo since 1997. She is a Nebraska first place National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and North Dakota National Association of Teachers of Singing Artists Awards (NATSAA) winner.
In addition to her performance activities, Dr. Noone has an extensive background as a musical and stage director. She has music and/or stage directed over thirty musicals in many of the aforementioned houses. She is the musical theatre coordinator at International Music Camp and is also very active in NATS, serving as the current district governor and past-president of ND NATS. She also teaches at the Trollwood Performing Arts School and with The Summer Arts Intensive. Dr. Noone is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
