The General Counsel is the University's attorney and is responsible for providing and coordinating all legal advice and representation to NDSU, the President of NDSU, and NDSU officials, employees and related entities. In addition, the General Counsel provides legal advice to officers of student organizations upon request. The General Counsel does not represent individuals, either students or employees in private legal matters or when their interests are adverse to NDSU, but can give general referral information. The General Counsel has an appointment as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of North Dakota. The General Counsel reports directly to the President. Rick D. Johnson is the General Counsel. He has been employed by NDSU since 1989. Prior to that he was the Chief Counsel for the N.D. State Board of Higher Education for 7 years and was a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of North Dakota. Lois Christianson is the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) for the Office of General Counsel. She has been employed by NDSU since 1999. Prior to that she worked in the areas of life insurance and banking compliance as well as serving as a legal assistant in other organizations. Mary Rohleder is the Contract Manager for the Office of the General Counsel. She has been employed part time by NDSU since September 2005, and provided contract services to NDSU prior to that time. Mary worked for the Lutheran Health Systems, which became Banner Health Systems, for eight years, first as a Legal Assistant and then as a Regional Contract Manager. Before working at Lutheran Health Systems, Mary worked as a legal assistant at several Fargo law firms. Contact information: mrohleder@cableone.net |

Debra McDonough is the Administrative Assistant for the Office of General Counsel and the Office of Equity and Diversity. She previously worked at the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department on campus for almost 4 years.
