American Academy in Rome Fellowships (AAR)

Rome Prize Applications are accepted in the following fields: Arts (architecture, design, historic preservation and conservation, landscape architecture, literature, musical composition, visual arts) and Humanities (ancient studies, medieval studies, Renaissance and early modern studies, modern Italian studies). Each Rome Prize winner is provided with a stipend, meals, a bedroom with private bath, and a study or studio. Those with children under 18 live in partially subsidized apartments nearby. Winners of 6-month and 11-month fellowships receive stipends of $12,500 and $25,000, respectively.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) American Fellowships

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Fellowships support graduate or postgraduate studies at accredited institutions. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. The overwhelming majority return to their home countries to become leaders in government, academia, community activism, the arts, and science.

American-Scandinavian Foundation

The American-Scandinavian Foundation awards fellowships of up to $23,000 which are intended to support an academic year-long stay and priority is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at foreign academic or research institutions. Grants beginning at $5,000 are considered more suitable for shorter research visits, both on the graduate or post-doctoral level. Funding is available to candidates in all fields.

Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI)

The Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI) will provide U.S. graduate students in the sciences and engineering with a high-quality international research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia.

Deadline: To be announced (There were no awards in 2011; status for 2012 is unknown at this time.)

Eligibility Requirements: U.S. citizenship, or permanent residence in the U.S. Current Master's or Ph.D. student at an American university in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics or Physics. David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships

David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships (National Security Education Program)– To support outstanding students who demonstrate high levels of academic performance and motivation to internationalize their education by developing expertise in languages, cultures, and world regions.

Deadline: January 31, 2013, 2:00 p.m. (PST)

National Science Foundation - East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI)

The primary goals of EAPSI are to introduce students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research setting, and to help students initiate scientific relationships that will better enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts in Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore or Taiwan. 

Deadline: Second Wednesday in November, annually.

The National Science Foundation-- International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) Program

This program supports active research by students enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation.  In the IRES program, students have an opportunity to engage in ongoing research programs and receive the preparation that is necessary to perform in international research environments.

Deadline: Third Tuesday in August, annually.

Fogarty-Ellison Overseas Fellowships

Fogarty-Ellison Overseas Fellowships in Global Health and Clinical Research from the NIH funds one year of clinical research training abroad. $25,000 plus $6,000 for additional travel and materials expenses. Open to graduate students in health professions.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships – Grants for dissertation research abroad for non-Western European Area Studies. Geographic areas include the following : Africa; East, Southeast, and South Asia, Pacific Islands; Near East; East Central Europe and Eurasia; and the Western Hemisphere (excluding US and territories).

Deadline: UW deadline: June 7, 2012

Eligibility Requirements: U.S. citizens or immigrant aliens; Ph.D. candidates in modern area studies, planning a career in teaching, government, international development and the professions, proficient in language of the host country.

Fulbright Study / Research Abroad Fellowships

This program provides master’s and doctoral candidates with grants to study or research abroad in academic fields and in the creative and performing arts and writing.

Closely read the country summary for the country to which you wish to apply. Each country has different guidelines, procedures and priorities. This is especially true of language and affiliation requirements. Please pay close attention to the details in the country summary to make sure your interests match before proceeding with an application. Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) Fellowship

Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) Fellowship provides students, scholars and professionals with support to perform policy relevant field research, in the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. In addition to engaging in research in the region, the IARO fellowship affords scholars the opportunity to increase their understanding of critical, policy relevant issues, develop and sustain international networks, and collaborate with foreign scholars on topics vital to both the academic and policy-making communities.

The Mitchell Scholars Program

The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, accommodations, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.
