
September 8, 2004
Interim Dean, David A. Wittrock, called the September meeting of the Graduate Council to order at 8:30 a.m., September 8, 2004, in the Badland Room of the Memorial Union.
In attendance were: Mark Aune, Canan Bilen-Green, Joseph Brennan, Ross Collins, Amanda Dillard, Gary Goreham, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Qun Huo, Ayanava Majumdar, Stephen O'Rourke, Judy Pearson, Rodney Traub, and David Wittrock.
The minutes fro the May 4, 2004 meeting were considered. Judy Pearson made a motion to approve the minutes, and Joe Brennan provided the second. Motion carried.
- Request for Associate Graduate Faculty Status for Virginia Johnston-Gelling. Gordon Bierwagen and Victoria Johnston-Gelling from the Polymers and Coatings Department were present. Joe Brennan moved to grant Victoria Johnston-Gelling Associate Graduate Faculty status, Judy Pearson seconded the motion. Motion passed. Victoria Johnston-Gelling is granted the status for a 6-year period.
- Request for Associate Graduate Faculty status for Gina Kelly and Leretta Smith. Kathleen Slobin, Gina Kelly, and Leretta Smith from the Department of Sociology were present. There was discussion as to whether these individuals were eligible for Associate Graduate Faculty status given that they did not have appointment as an Assistant Associate, or Full Professor. A motion was made by Judy Pearson to deny the request and recommend that the Department of Sociology appoint a faculty member as instructor of record for the courses. In addition, the Graduate Council will address the issue of granting teaching waivers for individuals hired as instructors who are ABD. Gary Goreham seconded the motion. Motion passed.
- In December of 2002 a statement to prohibit voting members of a department from pursuing an advanced degree or certificate from the department in which they hold an appointment was considered. No record exists of the action taken on that statement. Joe Brennan moved and Gary Goreham seconded a motion to table discussion of this statement to the October meeting.
- ME 734, Smart Materials and Structures: Gary Goreham made a motion to approve the course. Rodney Traub provided the second. Motion carried.
- ME 482/682, Fuel Cell Science and Engineering: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course. Gary Goreham provided the second. Mark Aune raised a question about whether courses needed to be taught prior to being assigned a permanent number. The motion was amended to grant approval providing university policy was not violated. Motion carried.
- ECE 775, Hardware for Cryptography: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course pending a check of university policy regarding whether courses needed to be taught prior to receiving a permanent number. Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
- COMM 796, TA Training in Communication I. TA Training in Communication II. These courses are presented for information only. Gary Goreham suggested that some indication of what level of performance was necessary to receive a passing grade be added to the syllabus.
- HIS 499/696, American South from 1850 to 1972. Presented for information only.
- Michelle Hallman has resigned her position in the Graduate School. A Search to hire a replacement in ongoing. A Graduate School staff member will be assigned to coordinate Graduate Council activities at that time.
- The search for a permanent Dean of the Graduate School is ongoing. The original search committee is involved in the process. The plan is to hire a permanent Dean soon.
- The new disquisition process has been implemented. There was an onrush of disquisition submissions prior to the policy change. Three have been submitted since the new procedure was instituted. They were approved pending format changes. The approved editors has been identified.
- The Graduate School's new website has been activated. The Graduate School has hired a graduate assistant to work for 20 hours per week to engage in web development. Problems, suggestions for improvement, and notification of difficulties should be sent to the Graduate School.
- The Graduate School has begun receiving online applications. The Graduate School will work with departments to assist the transition to this process.
