
October 13, 2004
The October meeting of the Graduate Council was called to order by Interim Dean, David A. Wittrock, at 8:30am , October 13, 2004 , in the Badlands Room of the Memorial Union.
In attendance were: Mark Aune, Canan Bilen-Green, Joseph Brennan, Ross Collins, Amanda Dillard, Gary Goreham, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Stephen O'Rourke, Judy Pearson, Donna Terbizan, Rodney Traub, and David Wittrock.
The minutes for the September 8, 2004 meeting were considered. Judy Pearson made a motion to approve the minutes, and Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
Melissa Selders-Ortez, the new Student Services Associate in the Graduate School and the new Graduate Council coordinator, was introduced to the Council members.
- Request for Associate Graduate Faculty Status for Alda Simoes, a visiting professor in the Coatings and Polymeric Material department, was considered. Dennis Tallman represented CPM. Associate Graduate Faculty status is being sought so that Dr. Simoes may team teach a CPB course. It was pointed out that associate status was not necessary if the person was not going to be the instructor of record. Judy Pearson moved, and Ross Collins seconded, that Alda Simoes be given Associate Graduate Faculty status. Council members indicated that approval could not occur unless a complete vita was submitted by the department, Joe Brennan moved to table the issue, Gary Goreham seconded, the motion was tabled.
- Mary Margaret Mooney, Dean Gross, and Charles Peterson were present to discuss a proposal to allow the Doctor of Nursing Practice program allow students entering the DNP program with a master's degree to submit a portfolio for consideration for the granting of course credit. Joe Brennan moved for approval of the portfolio option and for the allowance of 6 credits to be earned by DNP students for 797S. Gary Goreham seconded the motion, the motion passed.
- Interim Dean Wittrock proposed that a subcommittee be formed to address issues related to graduate assistantships. The subcommittee would make recommendations for issues that included, but were not limited to, eligibility for an assistantship, evaluation of performance as a graduate assistant, and dismissal from a graduate assistantship. Brennan suggested the subcommittee also address issues related to dismissal from the Graduate School . The council approved formation fo the subcommittee.
- Discussed proposal to add language allowing for a graduate teaching waiver. The Interim Dean was asked to survey our peer institutions to determine whether they had policies allowing for teaching waivers.
- MATH 473/673, Cryptology: Stephen O'Rourke made a motion to approve the course. Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
- PHYS 413/613, Lasers for Scientists and Engineers. Gary Goreham made a motion to approve the course. Ross Collins provided the second. Motion carried.
- PLSC 785, Crop Breeding Programs Management: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course pending a correction of the course name and the submission date on the proposal form. Judy Pearson provided the second. Motion carried.
- Interim Dean Wittrock suggested that, since Graduate Council could not ask for changes to the proposal for X96 courses, the Graduate Council act on these courses by conducting a pre-review, having the dean notify the submitting department of concerns, and acknowledging the receipt of information related to the course. Jud Pearson provided a motion to allow this, it was seconded by Donna Terbizan. Joe Brennan suggested an amendment in which the Graduate Dean would seek clarification from Academic Standards in order to determine the status of the Graduate School in reviewing X96 courses, in particular, could the Graduate Dean prevent the course from being approved. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti seconded the motion. The amendment passed. The amended motion was also passed.
