
November 10, 2004
The November meeting of the Graduate Council was called to order by Interim Dean, David A. Wittrock, at 8:30 a.m., November 10, 2004, in the Badlands Room in the Memorial Union.
In attendance were: Mark Aune, Joseph Brennan, Ross Collins, Amanda Dillard, Gary Goreham, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Ayanava Majumdar, Donna Terbizan, Rodney Traub, and David Wittrock.
The minutes for the October 13, 2004 meeting were considered. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti made a motion to approve the minutes, and Donna Terizan provided the second. Motion carried.
- William Martin presented a Request for Associate Graduate Faculty Status for Kathy Enger, Social Science Librarian. Associate Graduate Faculty Status is being sought so that Kathy may teach in the Educational Leadership graduate program and Occupational and Adult Education and Institutional Analysis doctoral program as needed because of the size of the program. Gary Goreham made a motion to approve the request to grant Associate Status to Kathy Enger. Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried.
- Kevin Thompson presented a Request for Associate Graduate Faculty Status for Michael Doyle. Michael will be a lecturer starting Fall Semester 05. Interim Dean Wittrock recommended applying for Adjunct Faculty Status. Ross Collins made a motion to approve the request for Associate Status for Michael Doyle, pending Adjunct Faculty appointment. Joseph Brennan provided the second. Motion carried .
- Kevin Thompson presented a request for a new program, M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration. This program is to be offered in addition to the M.S. in Social Science program and will mainly appeal to practicing professionals. Gary Goreham made a motion to approve the request for the M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration program. Joe Brennan provided the second. Motion carried.
- EDUC 460/660, Adolescent Readers: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course with the following change: the numbers next to letter grades be changed to percentages. Ross Collins provided the second. Motion carried.
- ENGL 765, Rhetorics and Poetics of Media: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course. Mark Aune provided the second. Motion carried.
- ENT 410/610, Integrated Management of Pests: Joe Brennan made a motion for the following changes to the course proposal: clarification of prerequisites, title be consistent between course proposal form and syllabus, dean signature on course proposal form, and clarification of course relationship to 700 level course with similar name. Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried.
- HNES 781, Orthopedic Assessment I: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course with the following change: under Assigments, correct Written Exams I & II . Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
- HNES 782, Orthopedic Assessment II: Ross Collins made a motion to approve the course. Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
- HNES 484/684, Therapeutic Exercise: Donna Terbizan made a motion to approve the course. Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
- HNES 485/685, Therapeutic Modalities: Harlene Hatterman-Valenti made a motion to approve the course with the following change: separate the Disabilities Statement from the Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism Statement. Mark Aune provided the second. Motion carried.
- HNES 486/686, Medical Aspects of Athletic Training: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti provided the second. Motion carried.
- HNES 487/687, Administration of Athletic Training Programs: Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the course with the following change: remove the word Additional from the list of assignments for HNES 687. Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
- Interim Dean Wittrock proposed a course proposal subcommittee be formed. It is needed to address items in course proposals such as the phrase "No additional resources needed."
- SOC 764, Parole and Probation: Interim Dean Wittrock Approved.
- Interim Dean Wittrock distributed information from peer institutions regarding Graduate Teaching Waivers. Most were similar to the Graduate Teaching Waivers statement of October 13, 2004. Joe Brennan made a motion to amend the term "students" to "individuals" in the sentence "Teaching waivers only allow students to serve as the instructor of record for 600 level courses and carry none of the other privileges of graduate faculty status." Mark Aune provided the second. Motion carried. Joe Brennan motioned to change the previously amended statement to read "Teaching waivers only allow individuals to serve as the instructor of record for specific 600 level courses and carry none of the other privileges of graduate faculty status." Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried. Gary Goreham provided the motion to approve the Graduate Teaching Waivers statement of October 13, 2004 with approved changes. Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried.
