    December 8, 2004

     

    The December meeting of the Graduate Council was called to order by Judy Pearson, at 8:30 a.m., December 8, 2004, in the Badlands Room in the Memorial Union.

    In Attendance: Mark Aune, Joe Brennan, Ross Collins, Amanda Dillard, Gary Goreham, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Qun Huo, Ayanava Majumdar, Judy Pearson, Donna Terbizan, Rodney Traub.

    Dr. Pearson offered congratulations to David Wittrock for being named Dean of The Graduate School.

    The minutes for the November 10, 2004 meeting were considered. Ross Collins made a motion to approve the minutes, and Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried.

    COURSE PROPOSALS

    • ENT 410/610, Integrated Management of Pests: Harlene Hatterman-Valenti spoke to the fact that the department will teach this course in spring semester. Approval timelines do not allow for the course to be approved prior. For this reason, the department also offers this course as ENT 499/610. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti made a motion for the approval of ENT 499/610 as a temporary course while ENT 410/696 is considered for approval. Gary Gorham provided the second. Motion carried.
    • Ross Collins made a motion for the approval of ENT 410/610. Rodney Traub provided the second. Motion carried.
    • ENT/BIO 742, Quantitative Biology: Gary Goreham made a motion for the approval of ENT/BIO 742. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti provided the second. Discussion: Donna Terbizan pointed out the email message from William Bleier indicates the title of the course has changed, but that is not stated on proposal form. Department needs to clarify if there is indeed a title change for this course. Motion carried.

    NEW BUSINESS

    • Donna Terbizan provided the motion to approve the proposal for New Options in the Master of Science Program in Nutrition and Exercise Science. Joe Brennan provided the second. Motion carried.
    • Judy Pearson presented the information regarding Graduate Council Approval of X96 courses. Dean Wittrock spoke to Provost Schnell who requested the Graduate Council should approve X96 course individually. Joe Brennan made a motion to place the issue of Graduate Council Approval of X96 Courses be placed on the agenda of the Graduate Faculty Meeting in Spring Semester. Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried.
    • Judy Pearson said Dean Wittrock would like the Graduate Council to continue meeting the second Wednesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. No attending member had issue with this meeting day and time.

    OLD BUSINESS

    • Judy Pearson presented the Proposal Meeting Requirements information for review. She stated that there would probably not be a decision made today as there are many controversial elements to the proposal. Joe Brennan recommended the item be tabled until the January meeting.
    • Ross Collins provided a motion to pass the policy regarding Faculty Pursuing Advanced Degrees. Donna Terbizan provided the second.
    • Joe Brennan provided a motion for a primary amendment to the policy to delete "Voting faculty member" and replace with "Full or Associate Faculty Member." Mark Aune provided the second.
    • Primary amendment motion failed. Joe Brennan provided the motion that the item be tabled until the January meeting. Gary Goreham provided the second. Motion carried.
    • Judy Pearson asked the subcommittees to prepare a progress report to be presented at the January meeting.
    • Joe Brennan provided the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti provided the second. Motion carried.
