The May 11 meeting of the Graduate Council was called to order by Dean David Wittrock, at 8:30 a.m., May 11, 2005, in the Plains Room in the Memorial Union.
In Attendance: Mark Aune, Canan Bilen-Green, Joe Brennan, Amanda Dillard, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, Jake Glower, Stephen O'Rourke, Donna Terbizan, Rodney Traub, Charlene Wolf-Hall
- Bill Martin was present to answer questions regarding the request for Associate Graduate Faculty status for Carol Rogne. After discussion, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti moved to grant a teaching waiver for fall semester and put the request for Associate Graduate Faculty status on the agenda for the first Graduate Council meeting fall semester. Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried.
- John Hershberger was present to answer questions regarding the request for Associate Graduate Faculty status for Emilio Esposito. After discussion, Joe Brennan made a motion to approve this request. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti provided the second. Motion carried.
- Phil McClean was present to discuss the proposed program changes to the Genomics program. The changes include a modification of curriculum, renaming the Computational Bioinformatics option the Bioinformatics option, and changing the program name to Genomics and Bioinformatics. Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the proposed changes. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti provided the second. Motion carried. It was then decided each change had to be approved separately. Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the option change. Donna Terbizan provided the second. Motion carried. Joe Brennan made a motion to approve the curriculum changes. Jake Glower proved the second. Motion carried.
- Jane Geidt and Dean Gross were present to discuss the Alternative Thesis project approved by the Graduate Council in Spring 2004. After discussion it was decided that the waiver would not be extended, but if there was interest in student's choosing this project in the future, it be brought back to the Graduate Council.
- A proposal to grant Douglas Schulz Associate Graduate Faculty status was presented to the council. Donna Terbizan made a motion to approve this appointment. Jake Glower provided the second. Motion carried.
- Donna Terbizan made the motion to approve the course proposals reviewed by the Academic Affairs subcommittee. Mark Aune provided the second. Motion carried.
- Interdisciplinary 797R, 798R and 799R- After discussion, it was decided to table this proposal until fall semester until questions could be answered. Dean Wittrock will talk to Kristi Wold-McCormick regarding this proposal.
- Brad Strand was present to discuss the proposed changes to the HNES Master's programs. He explained each program change and how they fit within the accreditation requirements. After discussion, Donna Terbizan made a motion to approve the proposed changes. Jake Glower provided the second. Motion carried.
At 9:55, Dean Wittrock adjourned the meeting.
