January 10, 2007The January meeting of the Graduate Council was called to order by Dr. David Wittrock, at 8:35am, January 10, 2007, in the Meineke Board Room of Memorial Union. In attendance: Mark Aune, Bill Berzonsky, Jacob Glower, Verlin Hinsz, Samudra Kugel, Renee Magnan, JoAnn Miller, Stephen O'Rourke, Seth Rasmussen, Charlene Wolf-Hall. The minutes for the December 13, 2006 meeting were considered. Charlene Wolf-Hall made a motion to approve the minutes. Seth Rasmussen provided the second. Motion carried. Requests for Associate Faculty Status/Teaching Waiver The Council considered the updated request from Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering to grant a teaching waiver to Dr. Thomas Bon to teach ABEN 452/652 Environmental Systems Design Fall Semester 2007. Verlin Hinz made a motion approve. Charlene Wolf Hall provided the second. Motion carried. Course and Program Changes The Academic Affairs committee was unable to meet during the break. Course proposals were reviewed by the entire Graduate Council. MATH 791, Harmonic Analysis and Applications: JoAnn Miller made a motion to approve the course. Samudra Kugel provided the second. Motion carried. PHY 481/681, Introduction to Solid State Physics: Verlin Hinz made a motion to approve the course. Bill Berzonsky provided the second. Motion carried. PHY 485/685, Quantum Mechanics I: Jacob Glower made a motion to approve the course. Renee Magan provided the second. Motion carried. ECON 410/610, Econometircs: Jacob Glower made a motion to approve the course. JoAnn Miller provided the second. Motion carried. SAFE 464/664, Etiology of Foodborne Illness: Mark Aune made a motion to approve the course. Seth Rasmussen provided the second. Motion carried. PPTH 758, Bacterial, Nematode and Viral Diseases of Plants: JoAnn Miller made a motion to approve the course. Samudra Kugel provided the second. Motion carried. Additional Items 12 credit enrollment cap Dr. Wittrock asked the Graduate Council for feedback regarding the current cap of 12 credits for graduate students. If a student wants to take more than 12 credits, he/she must obtain permission from the department and the Graduate School to have the cap increased for that semester. He presented a list of what peer institutions do and NDSU is very similar. After discussion, a motion was made by JoAnn Miller to increase the credit cap to 15 credits for graduate students. Seth Rasmussen provided the second. Motion carried. This proposal will be taken to the graduate faculty for approval. Disquisition process review There was more discussion regarding the review of the disquisition process. Policy Review Dr. Wittrock notified the Graduate Council that University Senate will be reviewing and possibly revising the following policies: 326: Research Misconduct 335: Code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct At 9:40 a.m., Dr. Wittrock adjourned the meeting.
