    April 9, 2008

    The April meeting of the Graduate Council was called to order by Dr. Wittrock, at 8:30 am, April 9, 2008 in the Lake Agassiz Room in Memorial Union.

    In attendance: Ann Burnett, Mac Butler, Jacob Glower, Samudra Kugel, Renee Magnan, Marjorie McCullgah, Brandy Randall, Rodney Traub, Charlene Wolf-Hall

    The minutes for the March 12, 2008 meeting were considered. Ann Burnett made a motion to approve the minutes. Mac Butler provided the second. Motion carried.

    Writing Across the Graduate Curriculum

    Dale Sullivan presented the Council with a proposal designed to improve writing across the graduate curriculum. Highlights include

    • Look at writing at the time of admission
    • Emphasis on the Center for Writers
    • English Department to offer a writing course for graduate students
    • Expectations of each advisory committee member clearly stated on Graduate School website
    • Role of Graduate Appointee changing to focusing on quality of writing

    Dr. Wittrock stated there are two items that will need to be voted on by the graduate faculty: 1. Change in recommendation form and 2. Putting into writing expectations of committee and appointee role.

    ake Glower made a motion to approve the proposal with the dean reporting on the outcomes in one year. Marjorie McCullagh provided the second. Motion carried.

    Communication Policy Revision Committee

    The second draft of the English Language Proficiency policy was presented to the Council. The following changes were suggested: 1. Change “during” to “by the third week” for reviewing graduate assistants 2. Adding a plan to item #1 and 3. Including all graduate assistants and not just graduate teaching assistants. If approved, this item will go the Graduate Faculty meeting for approval. Jake Glower made a motion to approve the proposal with suggested changes. Ann Burnett provided the second. Motion carried. Marjorie McCullagh made a motion to have the dean report of the outcomes of this policy change during spring semester 2009. Ann Burnett provided the second. Motion carried.

    Requests for Associate Faculty Status/Teaching Waiver

    The Council considered a request from the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology for Associate Graduate Faculty status for Berch Henry. Ann Burnett made a motion to approve. Rodney Traub provided the second. Motion carried.

    The Council considered a request from the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials for Associate Graduate Faculty status for Dante Battochi. Dr. Wittrock has confirmed the “Degree of Doctor” is a terminal degree in Italy. Ann Burnett made a motion to approve. Brandy Randall provided the second. Motion carried.

    Jacob Glower made a motion to approve the following course proposals:
