Healthy People 2010 is a health promotion and disease prevention agenda. It contains 467 objectives, which serve as a roadmap for improving health. The objectives are organized into 28 focus areas, each representing an important public health area. A limited set of objectives, known as the Ten Leading Health Indicators, are intended to help everyone more easily understand the importance of Healthy People 2010 and encourage participation in improving health in the next decade.

The objectives selected to measure progress among adolescents and adults for this Leading Health Indicator are presented below. These are only indicators and do not represent all the physical activity and fitness objectives included in Healthy People 2010.

Objective: Increase the proportion of adolescents who engage in vigorous physical activity that promotes cardiorespiratory fitness 3 or more days per week for 20 or more minutes per occasion (22-7)

Healthy People Baseline: 65 percent of students in grades 9-12 engaged in vigorous physical activity 3 or more days per week for 20 or more minutes per occasion in 1999.
Healthy People 2010 Target: 85 percent

Objective: Increase the proportion of adults who engage regularly, preferably daily, in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day (22-2)

Healthy People Baseline: 15 percent of adults aged 18 years and older engaged in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes 5 or more days per week in 1997
Healthy People 2010 Target: 30 percent
