RE:              Ladbury Lectures 2006

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“The Fur Trade on the Northern Plains” is the second program in the 2006 Ladbury Lecture Series at 6:00 PM Saturday, September 30.  The program, like others in the series, will take place at the old Ladbury Church (4 miles W, 1 N, ˝ W of the Sibley Crossing of Lake Ashtabula).

Presenter of the free public program the evening of September 30 is Richard Stenberg of Williston State College.  In period costume, Stenberg will explore the significance of the historic fur trade, a “sophisticated trade network,” says Stenberg, to life on the northern plains—for Native Americans, Europeans, and American settlers.  Stenberg, an enthusiastic and popular teacher of North Dakota history, brings this chapter of the regional story alive through living history.

Of local interest: just a few miles west of Ladbury church, on Baldhill Creek, is the site of an American Fur Company outpost.

Ladbury Lecture programs are held in the restored, historic church.  Scholarly presentations take place in informal manner, with attendees invited to join discussions and ask questions.

The Ladbury Lectures are supported by a grant from the North Dakota Humanities Council.  Additional support is provided by the Center for Heritage Renewal, North Dakota State University.
