Free to NDSU Students and the Public, and special invitation to members of Phi Alpha Theta and History Club:
: Rain for the Earth, film and discussion with Professor Tom Isern.
Pavek Hall Lounge, 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2006.
Rain for the Earth is a recently discovered documentary about the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Little is known about this government film--no one knows who, specifically, made it--but content analysis reveals that (sshh, don't tell anyone) the film was shot in Slope County, North Dakota. The program includes a 15-minute film and a discussion of its portrayal of life on the northern plains. Students in Isern's HIST 104 or 381 classes: This program can be used as a make-up for one class day's attendance-participation points.

Our gathering for a sundae social (on a Thursday) was a great success! Plenty of ice cream and build-your-own toppings provided a lip-smacking start to the evening, while Sarah quizzed us all with brain-teasers. We all teamed up for Trivial Pursuit, succumbing to the skillful play of Tony and Jess, who made a (surprising!) come-back, dashing everyone else's hope for victory. The program committee thanks all who participated in this brief break from responsibility and proffers praise for the humbling effect of brain games. We hope to see you all at our next event, Wednesday, February 22, when we'll show *1492* at 6:30 p.m. in Minard 138. As always, the movie, refreshments, and follow-up discourse are free and open to the public.
8 February 2006
Tonight: David Danbom, Huey Newton, and Spike Lee, Prairie Rose Room, MU, 7-? p.m.(film, A Huey P. Newton Story, about one of the founders of the Black Panthers, directed by Spike Lee; Dr. Danbom will be one of those discussing the film afterwards).
Two events of interest for February 9: Sundae Social (on Thursday), Min. 407, 7-9 p.m. (build your own ice cream sundae and play brain games); History & Folksong, Pavek Hall Lounge, 6:30-? p.m. (Dr. Isern will be telling & singing funny, frank, and scandalous stories that deal with historical events).
10 January 2006
Elections begin today and end Tuesday, January 17, at 3:00 p.m. Come by the history department faculty suite hallway, 4th floor Minard, and cast your vote in ballot box. 14 December 2005
The planning committee met 14 December 2005 and has come up with some great ideas. Tentatively planned for Spring 2006: Ice Cream & Games Social; Movie & Speaker; Third Annual Remele Presentation; and Casual Movie Night (Social & Safari). If you care to help out with implementing the programs (there's always plenty to do!), contact jessica.clark@ndsu.edu, david.mills@ndsu.edu, sarah.lacher@ndsu.edu, or suzzanne.kelley@ndsu.edu.
11 December 2005
Three of our Phi Alpha Theta & History Club officers (plus one more student) made outstanding presentations at the Barnes County Historical Museum on 11 December 2005. Their presentations were the finale of their Senior Seminar topics. Each student researched an ethnic group that settled in Barnes County, wrote stellar papers, and presented them in history-profession fashion to an appreciative audience. The presenters were: Nelia Cromley (our secretary), Danny Nassett (our VP), Amy Adahl (our treasurer), and Brian Olson. For pictures, look here. The larger half of the Senior Seminar made their own presentations at Bonanzaville, 7 December 2005. Their research focused on the history of buildings (each student picked one) located on the Bonanzaville grounds, and their presentations were well received by an audience of about twenty people. The Bonanzaville papers were presented by Cole Allen, Ryan Brumley, John McCormack, Jessica Schlieve, and Tyler Woeste. (Sorry, no photos available.) Commendations to this new batch of historians! If you missed their presentations, you might hear them as repeat performances--four of these students will present at the UND Phi Alpha Theta Conference and two will present at the Vermillion History Conference next spring.
6 December 2005
Phi Alpha Theta, Alpha Iota Psi Chapter, welcomed four new initiates into our membership on 6 December 2005: Amy Adahl, Kathleen Brokke, Sarah Lacher, and David Mills. See photos of the dinner and roses and cheery faces. Thank you to our faculty members who joined in the time-honored celebration as we added our new members: Jerry Anderson, Dennis Cooley, Tom Isern, and our faculty sponsor, Ineke Justitz.
