Events of note for this week!
1) Phi Alpha Theta and History Club, in cooperation with the Department of History and the Department of Mathematics, will host Fred Haring, Associate Professor Emeritus, Mathematics, as he presents "Remembering World War II: A Journey out of Java," at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 14, 2007, in the Prairie Room of the Memorial Union. Haring will discuss World War II in the Pacific and talk about his experiences as a Eurasian teenager who, caught up in this war, ultimately found his way to NDSU by way of The Netherlands. Haring taught in the Mathematics Department from 1962-1994. He also was one of the earliest organizers of the Governor's School in Mathematics.
2) The Department of History, Philosophy, and Religion sponsors its next History Colloquium on Friday, November 16, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. in the Memorial Union Art Gallery. PAT/HC member Suzzanne Kelley will present "Allen Sapp's Memory Art: Rural Living and the Red Pheasant Cree," a portion of her dissertation research about memory artists in the Great Plains. Following the colloquium, all interested parties are invited to Dutch Treat dinner at Acupulco's new location. The first two history graduate students to let Jack Jackson (history dept. admin. secretary) know they are interested, will have their dinner (not including any alcohol) courtesy of Philosophy funds.

Two important upcoming events!
1) Amanda Eder will present "The Role of Religion in the Farmworker Movement: Support from Institution, Religious, and Laity in the 1960s and1970s" on Wednesday, October 24, in the Memorial Union Prairie Room, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. If you can't catch her presentation then, she'll do a repeat on Wednesday, October 31, same place, same time. Amanda's presentation is sponsored by NDSU Multicultural student services as part of the celebration of October as Cultural Awareness Month.
2) Book Sale: Our annual book sale will be Tuesday and Wedsnesday, October 30-31, from 10-2 in Minard near the coffee shop. Lots of books of all kinds will be available at very reasonable prices. Work a shift if you can, or just stop by (bring friends) and do some shopping.

Community Service Opportunity: History Calls!
In support of the organization "Preservation North Dakota," the History Club and Phi Alpha Theta invite volunteers to participate in the "Hutmacher" project to restore the roof of the Hutmacher farm using earthen building techniques. The work party is scheduled for October 12-14. Transportation and lodging will be provided. Combining "hard labor" with entertainment, visits to historic sites, campfires and friends, this project promises to be a memorable one. Sign up by emailing Dr. Tom Isern as soon as possible.

Wow, what an interesting last day of classes. I hope the blackout didn't upset any plans or work. I think it was a memorable way to end my last semester at NDSU. I would like to share the executive committee for Fall 2007's History Club and Phi Alpha Theta!

We remind you that our Spring banquet is on Thursday, April 26, 6:00 p.m., North Town Grill, 3500 12th Avenue (corner I-29 and 12th Avenue N). Dinner tickets are $13.00 per person which includes your choice of a chicken, steak, or a vegetarian meal, a salad, and a soda. Jennifer Wilkie, Phi Alpha Theta graduate student, will present a public program on Saturday, October 21, at 6 p.m. in the old Ladbury Church in northern Barnes County. She and Dr. Tom Isern will discuss Growing Up on Bald Hill Creek, a memoir by Harvey Sletten, who grew up in the town of Hannaford. Jennifer's presentation results from her thesis research and is sponsored by the North Dakota Humanities Council. Congratulations to Jessica Clark, who presented "German-Russian Childhood: Growing up on the Great Plains" during the Chadron State College (in Nebraska) Oktoberfest celebration. On October 10, Jess responded to an invitation by the CSC Phi Alpha Theta chapter to be the first ever presenter in the new PAT Lecture Series. The location was the prestigious Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

The Phi Alpha Theta and History Club Welcome Back Picnic will be held at Johnson Park, easy walking distance from campus and just south of T Lot. The picnic begins at 4:00 p.m. and will end at 6:00 p.m., September 14, 2006. Also, please mark your calendars for our Book and Bake Sale, October 17 and 18, in front of the music auditorium in the Festival Concert Hall.
