Course Options

The following revisions will be required for all students who enter the

History major beginning with the Fall 2004 semester. Students who enter

before then may choose to follow either the new or the old requirements for the History major.

 

The Public History major totals 69-81 semester credit hours.

History Major Requirements (39 credits)

100-200 level courses

Students must complete at least 9, but no more than 15 credits in 100 or 200 level courses. No sequences are required, although students may include History 101 and 102 (Western Civilization) and History 103 and 104 (US History) in their course selection. Public History core courses at the 200 level may be used to meet this requirement.

 

300-400 level courses

Of the 39 credit hours required for the major, at least 24 credits must be taken at the 300-400 level. History courses at the 400 level in the Public History core may be used to for elective credits needed in addition to the Depth and Distribution requirements. Required courses at this level are:

     Hist 390: Historical Research and Writing

Hist 489: Senior Seminar

 

Depth requirement: a sequence of two courses (6 credits).  See list of approved sequence courses.

 

Distribution requirement: 15 credits (may include the 6-credit sequence).

Students meet the 15 credit distribution requirement by completing at least 6 credits in two of three distribution categories and 3 in the third. The three distribution categories are U.S. History, European History, and Widening Horizons.
