Brauer Scholarship

The Albert G. and Celeste Brauer Scholarship was established by Albert G. and Celeste Brauer in April 1992. The award is given annually to one student in good academic standing enrolled in history. Brauer Scholarships are also awarded annually to first year students and to a student enrolled in nurses training. Albert Brauer graduated with a degree in History Education from NDAC in 1938 and taught at West Fargo High School prior to joining the army in 1939. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1962 after 23 years of service. From 1962 to 1980 he taught history and government at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, Ohio. Celeste Brauer was a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War Two who worked as a nurse at Kent State University for many years. The Brauers met when they were both stationed in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Roach Endowment

The Corwin Carlyle Roach Memorial Endowment was established by his widow, Agnes Roach, and his daughter, Mary Sawyer, in 1990, following his death in May, 1989. Dr. Corwin Roach was director of the NDSU School of Religion and professor of Philosophy and History at NDSU from 1959 to 1978. In 1971 he received the Faculty Lectureship and in 1974 he was named the Blue Key Doctor of Service. He graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1925, and continued on at Yale to earn a M.A., a Ph.D. and a M.Div. from the Divinity School at Yale. In 1927 he was ordained as an Episcopal minister. Before coming to NDSU, he was dean and professor at Bexley Hall Divinity School at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

The department bases its choice upon recommendations of department faculty, quality of writing and thinking the student displays in history classes, the student's academic record, and her or his promise as a student of history.
