Brauer Scholarship
The Albert G. and Celeste Brauer Scholarship was established by Albert G. and Celeste Brauer in April 1992. The award is given annually to one student in good academic standing enrolled in history. Brauer Scholarships are also awarded annually to first year students and to a student enrolled in nurses training. Albert Brauer graduated with a degree in History Education from NDAC in 1938 and taught at West Fargo High School prior to joining the army in 1939. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1962 after 23 years of service. From 1962 to 1980 he taught history and government at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, Ohio. Celeste Brauer was a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War Two who worked as a nurse at Kent State University for many years. The Brauers met when they were both stationed in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Lyons Scholarship
The award is given to a student whose written work exemplifies Michael J. Lyons' dedication to vivid and clear prose. The student's writing should demonstrate analytical and synthesizing skills and the ability to write with precision and style. The award was established by his friends and colleagues in 1993 to honor him for his outstanding contributions to the study of history and for his devotion to the written word.
Michael J. Lyons earned his B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1954, his M.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1963, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1969. His major publications are: World War II: A Short History (Prentice Hall, 1989, 1993, 1998) and World War I: A Short History (Prentice Hall, 1993, 1999).
Lyons served as Chair of the History Department from 1972 to 1989. He was also the co-editor of the Institute for Regional Studies from 1981 to 1992. He won the 1993 Outstanding Research/Creative Activity Award from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. After his retirement in 1993, he was named Professor Emeritus by the State Board of Higher Education.

Newman Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hansen of Hunter, North Dakota established this scholarship in 1983 and since their deaths, their daughter, Kathleen Purser of Perley, Minnesota has assumed the role of donor. The History Department awards the scholarship in alternate years to the outstanding junior majoring in history. The department bases its choice both on the candidate's previous academic record and on her or his promise of future contributions to the field of history.

Roach Endowment
The Corwin Carlyle Roach Memorial Endowment was established by his widow, Agnes Roach, and his daughter, Mary Sawyer, in 1990, following his death in May, 1989. Dr. Corwin Roach was director of the NDSU School of Religion and professor of Philosophy and History at NDSU from 1959 to 1978. In 1971 he received the Faculty Lectureship and in 1974 he was named the Blue Key Doctor of Service. He graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1925, and continued on at Yale to earn a M.A., a Ph.D. and a M.Div. from the Divinity School at Yale. In 1927 he was ordained as an Episcopal minister. Before coming to NDSU, he was dean and professor at Bexley Hall Divinity School at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
The department bases its choice upon recommendations of department faculty, quality of writing and thinking the student displays in history classes, the student's academic record, and her or his promise as a student of history.

This scholarship is endowed soley by the contributions of the faculty of the Department of History, Philosophy and Relgious Studies. Recipients of this scholarship are chosen by the members of the Department.

Beaton Scholarship
The DARROW R. BEATON and ELINOR E. BEATON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in 1999 by the Beatons to honor the memory of their late daughter Gail Beaton Peterson, wife of NDSU History professor Larry Peterson. Mr. Beaton lived near the campus as a child and graduated from NDAC in 1947, after interrupting his college career to serve in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He credited his education at NDAC and his North Dakota roots for preparing him to lead a successful and intellectually engaged life.
