Submission policies for It's Happening at State
Process and guidelines
It’s Happening at State is a bimonthly electronic news publication for and about the faculty and staff of NDSU. Story submissions are encouraged. All stories are edited for length and Associated Press Style.
Articles in It’s Happening also may be posted on www.ndsu.edu/news and may be distributed to media outlets as media releases. Articles on internal-targeted announcements like safety training, ITS training and Human Resources seminars, will not be posted to the news site.
Submit stories
The preferred method to receive submissions is via email. Please send all submissions to ndsu.itshappening@ndsu.edu.
Posting schedule
It’s Happening at State is posted to www.ndsu.edu/ihas on paydays, which are typically the 15th and the last working day of the month. If the pay date falls on a weekend or holiday, It's Happening is posted the preceding workday.
Each time a new issue is posted online, an email with a link to the current issue is sent. Anyone who is an NDSU employee will get an email via the official listserv. Off-campus individuals who want to receive an email notification when issues are posted online should submit a valid email address to Char Goodyear at char.goodyear@ndsu.edu.
Submissions deadlines
Submission deadlines are three working days prior to the posting date. Submission deadlines are available at www.ndsu.edu/ihas.
Submission guidelines
Articles in It’s Happening at State are placed in one of seven categories: University News, Diversity, Research, People, Events, Publications and Presentations, Shorts and Reminders, and Calendar.
The following criteria serve as guidelines when considering articles for submission. There may be situations when exceptions are made. In situations where It’s Happening is unable to publish an article, for whatever reason, other outlets on campus such as The Spectrum, KDSU and department newsletters should be sought to announce news.
Stories likely to be published include, but are not limited to:
• Messages from President Dean L. Bresciani
• Faculty and staff member awards
• Faculty presentations and publications
• Campus seminars
• Faculty and department grants
• Student academic honors
• Faculty and staff award nominations
• NDSU Fine Arts events
• New hires and promotions
• Campus organization community work
Stories not likely to be published include, but are not limited to:
• Non-NDSU-sponsored community events, even if the event is held on campus
• Non-academic student achievement (athletics, livestock, judging awards, etc.)
• Student organization news or announcements
• Classified advertisements or classified-type announcements
Students and ‘It’s Happening’
Because “It’s Happening” is an internal news publication primarily for faculty and staff, only high academic honors and awards received by students will be published. When submitting a story about a student, include level in school, their major and hometown.
If a student organization is planning an event that is a form of community outreach that promotes the university, an article on the event may be published.
Photographs
Whenever possible, we prefer to include a photo with newsletter articles. Dan Koeck, NDSU photographer, takes faculty and staff photos every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. If you are unavailable during that time, contact Koeck at dan.koeck@ndsu.edu or 1-8334 to schedule an appointment.
