Essay Questions for Final

Based on the lectures you have heard, and on Tocqueville's definitions in Chapter 25, is the instructor of this course a democratic historian or an aristocratic historian?

A key concept laced throughout Democracy in America is the tyranny of the majority. The principle concern of American public affairs today is the war on terrorism. The greatest terrorist in American history, judged by the results produced, was John Brown. Given the difficulty of overcoming majority power in American democracy, was John Brown justified in what he did in Kansas Territory and at Harper's Ferry?

How well do the characters and events in the folksong, "Sweet Betsy from Pike," illustrate the observations made by Tocqueville in Chapter 41, "How Americans Understand Equality of the Sexes"?

Another Fine Mess

OK, no wonder people have been asking me when the Cultural Currents assignment is due. I made a cut&paste error in making up the calendar. I meant for this Friday to be the due date, but I see the calendar notes conflict. So, I have to set back the due date. Just be sure to post before the list closes on Friday, 10 December.
