Revised Scores for Final

Due to a mistake in coding for the questions about Reconstruction on the final (you know, the questions where all answers were supposed to be counted right), there was a general miscalculation of scores on the final. All scores previously posted were 6 points too low. I've added the 6 points, and here are the revised scores. In addition, I've examined the roster for those final grades where the 6 points make a difference, and I'm initiating grade changes as merited. I'm sorry about the mistake, and I'm working to make the correction as quickly as possible--should be done this afternoon.

Final Exam Questions

As per discussion in class last Thursday, the final exam essay is going to be a take-home. I'm posting two questions here; write on one; turn in your answer to Jeff in class on Tuesday or Thursday of the coming week.

By participating in the take-home essay this way, you are affirming that you have done your own work--written your own essay. It's fine to talk among yourselves and even with others about what you might say, but you have to write it yourself, OK?

1. Based on the lectures you have heard, and on Tocqueville's definitions in Chapter 25, is the instructor of this course a democratic historian, or an aristocratic historian?

2. A key concept laced throughout Democracy in America is the tyranny of the majority. The principle concern of American public affairs today is the war on terrorism. The greatest terrorist in American history, judged by the results produced, was John Brown. Given the difficulty of overcoming majority power in American democracy, was John Brown justified in what he did in Kansas Territory and at Harper’s Ferry?
