Virtual Office Hours

Miles & I are setting up a session of virtual office hours (see link at right of home page) in the chatroom. We'll be present there from 7:00 to whenever Thursday evening September 7. We can handle questions about logistics and administration of the course--Miles is the one with the finger on the controls, of course--or about History in general. Drop in if you'd like to talk about anything.

Calendar for This Fall

Greetings to all enrolled in HIST 103 DCE Fall 2006! I'm the author of the course; Miles Lewis is the instructor. Right now he's traveling on research, and so I'm filling in to get out the initial mailings and do some early arrangements. This is the first week of classes, but for this online course, it's an organizational week, with real work getting started next week. See the calendar, which I've just posted, linked from the home page of the course. The main lecture content of the course is contained on CDs, which we have to mail to you. That's why Miles is gathering mailing addresses from you. If you haven't written him yet (at lewis@plainsfolk.com) with current ontact information (mailing address, plus the e-mail address you really use), then do so right away. He's completing the roster, and then I'll do the mailing. I expect to mail the CDs this Friday (the 25th). In a couple of weeks I'll go online live in the chat room to visit with anyone who wants to talk about History. All the day-to-day needs of the course, Miles handles them. Hey, good luck in the course!

Fall 2006 session

Hello! We are gearing up to start the fall section of History 103DCE. There are some things that we do need to get accomplished in the first week of the course.

First, I need to get email and hard addresses from everyone. The email address can be any that you want, but it will be the primary way the course keeps in contact. The hard address is so that we can send you course lecture CDs via traditional US ground mail. Be careful with this one and get me a current address. If I don't get a current address sent to me by email, I send these to your address of record that the registrar has (for many of you this would be your parent's house or the apartment you had last year). So, you can see that a current mailing address is pretty important.

Second, get a copy of Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America." It is the only text for the course, and should only run you about 6 or 7 bucks. Also cruise throughout the homepage and familiarize yourself with the course. The calendar should be updated shortly. The first week of the course is an administrative week to give me time to get records, quiz bank access, and CD mailings complete. After that we will jump right in!!
