Examinations for HIST 104

There are three major exams, each counting 100 points; thus exam scores determine 3/5 of your grade in the course.  Each exam

Comprises 45 multiple-choice questions counting 2 points each

Includes one essay question counting 10 points

Is given on the day indicated on the course calendar

As the schedule indicates, the third exam is scheduled in the final exam period specified by the registrar.  The final is not cumulative; it covers only the last third of the course; except that the essay question may be more broad than that.

The multiple-choice questions on the exam

Are straightforward, meaning you know the answer or you don’t

         Are not trick questions

Never include those nasty “none of these” or “all of these” answers

Require you to choose the correct answer from among four possible answers

Policies of scholastic honesty, of course, apply to the administration of exams in this course.

Worried about writing essays for exams?  Read how to write essay exams.

On exam day, bring to class a pencil for marking multiple-choice answers and a blue or black pen for writing essays.  Scan sheets, as well as notebook paper for the essays, will be provided (no charge).

Posting Grades

Exam scores will be posted via the weblog framed into the middle of the home page.  They will be posted according to confidential ID#s for the  course.

Make-Up Exams

In order for you to receive a make-up exam, you have to request one (by e-mail message to the graduate assistant) and state the reason you missed the regular exam.  We don't need documentation of the reason.

If you arrive late for a regularly-scheduled exam, and any other student already has left the room, you are required to request and take a make-up.

Make-up exams are 100% essay.  In my experience students do about as well on the make-ups as on the regular exams, but having all-essay make-ups, as you can understand, helps to discourage frivolous make-up requests!

No exams will be given early!  Don't even ask!  It's wonderful to have lots of students, but sheer numbers make it impossible to accommodate the schedules of individuals.
