Texts for Dr. Isern's Section of HIST 104

Texts for this section of 104 are not necessarily the same as for other sections, so read this!

Required Text

The required text is Democracy in America, by Alexis de Tocqueville (New York: NAL/Dutton, 1956.)  This is an abridged and inexpensive edition of a lengthy work first published a century and a half ago.  There are regular, required reading assignments in the Tocqueville text.

Optional

An optional text for the course is America and Its Peoples, by Martin et al.  This is the common text adopted for all NDSU sections of HIST 104.  You're not required to buy this text, and you are not responsible for any reading assignments in it.  Some people, though, like to have a comprehensive and factual text to use as a reference in support of lecture and to look up things they may have missed.

Another, inexpensive alternative for those who would like a backup text providing basic facts in support of lecture is to consult online texts.  Here are some links.
