Quiz 3

Tomorrow starts Unit 3. Time flies when you are having fun. Some of you need to start having more fun before time has flown!

Quiz 3 is available for you when you get ready. I publish these early in the week, but you should not feel rushed. (I do this so I don't forget!!!) The link is http://users.smartlite.it/historyrfd/quizzes/104quiz3.asp

This week, TQ talks about a couple of interesting issues, the Doctrine of Human Perfectability, and the the development of an American "aristocracy" based on industrialization. Perfectability does not here refer to absolute perfection, but rather to perfection for a particular state of development. For instance, an "A" in a course is a "perfect" grade. It does not mean you have perfect knowledge, only that you met the requirements at the level prescribed for the grade. Keep that in mind.

Quiz 2

I know some of you have had a few problems getting to Quiz 1. Don't worry, we'll work them out. Quiz 1 will be available for a while longer. In the meantime, Quiz 2 is now ready for your enjoyment at

On other fronts, I would like to see more discussion on the Gap. We have a couple of good threads with which to work. Feel free to add others.

Quiz information

CDs are in the mail, and you will soon be ready to take the first quiz. This is the place to do so. Below this paragraph, there is an active link. When you are ready to take the quiz, Right-Click the link. On the drop-down menu that appears, select "Open in New Window." a new window will appear with the log-in page for the quiz. If you Left Click on the link, the log-in page will appear in a tiny box and you will have to scroll back and forth. It works, but it is a real pain. Make sure to Right Click. Once you log on a pop-up will inform you of the time limit. Make sure you watch the time. OK? Here's the link for Quiz 1:

http://users.smartlite.it/historyrfd/quizzes/104quiz1.asp

Links are nearly identical for all quizzes, and someone is going to try to work ahead. It won't work. First, all of the previous semesters' quizzes were on a different host server. Second, you can't take the quizzes until I post the new roster to the server. Sorry!

If you encounter any problems, let me know, we'll work it out together. If you log on to the quiz "accidently" before you get the CDs, I don't know if I can help. The only way to reset the quiz so you can take it over is to re-publish the quiz. That has the nasty side-effect of erasing everyone's scores. Don't play aaround with the quizzes. Thanks!

Summer Session is under way!

We are off to a good start. I have mailing addresses for everyone, and CDs were scheduled to be mailed this morning! Look for them soon.

Everyone has been subscribed to the Gap. We have 26 members in the class at this time, and all but 6 have sent in their introductions. I will be sending an e-mail with further explanations of how the Gap works and why we do it, so be looking for that.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Others may also have the same question. I am here to help you succeed; don't be shy about asking for assistance at any time. Many of you have never done an on-line course, some have. I want this to be a productive, pleasant experience for everyone. Above all, don't wait until the last couple of weeks to tell me about any situations that are interfering with your ability to complete course requirements. iIhave dealt with everything from complications with pregnancy to overseas deployments. We can work through it.

HIST 104 DCE - Spring '08 End of the Line

According to the university calendar, the last finals end at 12:30 tomorrow. That is also the deadline for all submissions for scoring. Any item e-mailed for scoring after that time will not recieve a score.

Friday afternoon I will take down all four sections of the Cumberland Gap. If you would like to exchange a final message or two with your classmates, you are certainly welcome to do so. I can not give you a specific time, but it will be sometime after 2:00 p.m. I have to get the Summer session students subscribed and going since we start over next Tuesday!
