Research Reports for HIST 382

A research report is the most substantial single project (50 points) you can do to accumulate soft points. The amount and depth of work required, of course, is commensurate with the large number of points attached. The good thing about a research report, besides the number of points possible, is that it allows you to pursue some topic of particular interest in depth.  Here are the elements involved in completing this assignment.

1.      Identify a subject pertaining to history and life in Canada that you wish to explore in depth. Make a proposal to me by e-mail message, and I will respond. This is where I rule on the suitability of the topic and give you my advice on it. The range of possible topics is practically unlimited, so long as the focus is on Canada. The topic may be one obviously historical or one of historical import that lies in some other field (environment, music, whatever).

2.      Once your topic is approved, begin research. The research must comprise a variety of sources, including

·        At least one book, and preferably several

·        At least three periodical articles, and preferably more

·        An Internet search

3.      Write your report to a length of about 1000 words. Here is a generic outline.

                    I.      Introduction, wherein you introduce your topic and, at the end, state a thesis.

II.      Background, where you provide whatever historical or cultural background information the reader will need to understand the specifics of your story.

III.      Body, where you present your findings.

IV.      Conclusion, wherein you discuss the significance of your findings to the study of Canada.

4.      Append a bibliography listing your sources in standard format. (No notes.)

5.      Post the report to the Club Car.
