Specs for Assignments
I got some documents up that you need for your assignments. Again, the scheme is, you have a series of three out-of-class assignments: web search, book review, pop culture report. If you decide at the outset what your report topic will be, then you can use the web search and the book review to do background research for your report. I've recently posted the specs for the pop culture report; check these out, and I'll talk about them in class. Also, I've posted a revised (although by no means copmplete) bibliography for the course, which may be of use as you choose a book for review.

Canada-U.S. Relations
I noticed a recent blurb in the
Monitor about U.S. relations with the new Martin government. You'll find it here.

Jump-Starting Lipset
As I said, you should be into the Lipset text by now. Come Tuesday the 27th, I'd like to have some discussion of the early chapters in class. The Acknowledgments and Preface, in order to get a handle on what the author is trying to do. Chapter 1, because it lays down the idea that predicates the lecture we are into right now. Check out the study guide.
Status Quo
Good to see a number of you now in the Club Car. This message is a reminder to all of us, including me, as to where we are on the calendar. We're running a little ahead in the lecture schedule, which is fine, so things won't have to be rushed. My reminder to you at this point is that you should be reading in the Lipset text. There's a study guide for it at lower left. I'll check it over the weekend, likely make some revisions, but it's substantially complete. So your initial comments on the early sections of the book are welcome, of course, in this space. The reminder to myself is to get the specs for pop culture reports put together, so that you can plan your sequence of assignments: web search - book review - report. Also in support of that I'll get the Enrichment page pumped up with more pop culture features, and I have a man working on revisions of the bibliography. Stay tuned.
Hello All
Hello!
I'm Ben Hauger a senior hailing from Morris, Minnesota. I am majoring in Political Science with a minor in History. It's late now and I am watching "My Cousin Vinny", it's on A&E. I realize it isn't exactly Canada related, but I am hoping it'll help me with my LSATs.

Curling, the frozen mans shuffle-board...
Hello, I'm Tyler Anderson. I hail from a little town just off of the Canadian border that goes by the name of Rock Lake. I graduated from NDSU about 2 & 1/2 years ago and have now decided to come back from the real world for a little while and persue my masters. Just what have I been doing in those 2 & 1/2 years you might ask; well I enlisted in the army (reserve) and pursued a career in teaching on the civilian side. As stated earlier I grew up in close proximity to Canada and so I know more than your average American about our friendly little cousins to the north. If I could have, I would have voted for Preston Manning. See you all in class.

Members of the Blog
OK, that title somehow sounds R-rated, but I didn't intend it so. What I mean is, having collected e-mail addresses the first day, I'm going to try to make you all members of the weblog, so that you can post to the Club Car. This is, admittedly, a little experimental for me, as I haven't done a blog with more than a few members. What I think will happen now is, you'll receive an e-mail message inviting you to membership. This should have instructions for activating your account. Give this a try, please. And if you get your weblog membership up and going, how about posting a little introduction of yourself to the Club Car? Just introduce yourself to the rest of us in the class.

Thaw in Can-Am Relations
Prime Minister Martin seems to be starting off on more cordial terms with Pres. Bush than was the case with former PM Chretien. Canadian companies now are going to share in reconstruction contracting in Iraq.

More on Textbooks
The saga continues. The first text, Lipset, is in stock for purchase from the bookstore, no problem. The second text, Beal, is supposed to be in print in the US, but the bookstore warehouse won't supply. The bookstore is trying to purchase direct from the publisher in Toronto. In the meantime, I have 9 copies in my private stock, which I now make available for $10 US per, first come first serve, give me a check or a tenner. You might find a used copy with an Internet vendor. And if all else fails, I have an inquiry out to the Canadian bookseller, McNally Robinson, and will attempt a block purchase. Finally, as noted earlier, the third text I had ordered went out of print, and so now I have a substitute order out for the
Short History of Quebec. Stay tuned--I'll stay on top of this until it's all settled.

Ready or Not
This week I've been updating material for HIST 382, which I haven't taught in several years. The website is now adequate to get us started. At left are lecture titles. You'll see I've only linked up one or two study guides for lectures. I'm overhauling all the lectures, and so additional study guides will blink in as we go along. There are study guides for two texts, but not the third,
Dickinson's Short History of Quebec. I've just ordered this text, replacing one that went out of print, and so it won't be here for the start of term, but it's our third text, anyway. At right are various information documents about the course. The bibliography is being revised, will be done as soon as my student assistant arrives to finish entering data. Specs for one assignment, the pop culture report, are yet to be written. This report will be a review essay on a movie, cd, or some other feature of Canadian popular culture. Ready or not, here we go--Welcome!
