The great American Desert started off about some of the first european explorers to explore the great american desert. Alexander Mackenzie was the first person overland to the pacific. Hernan Cortes was explorer from Spain. Cortes was the founder and conqueror of th Aztecs empire. His expedition lasted from 1540-41. Finding the seven cities of Cibola. He was the first eorpean in the plains. Looking for new laces for spanish settlement but found the great plains not to be a place of good resources. After the spanish, the French explorers were introduced. Some french explorers of the plains included Charles Claude Du Tisne, Pierre and Paullnallet and a few others. Pierre Gaultier de Varennes ,made an expedition into western South Dakota in 1742. I really enjoyed hearing about the new Foundland dogs, like seaman, lewis and clarks dog, that traveled with them. Zebulon Pike went looking for the source to the Mississippi. After all of these explorers went through the great plains it seems that every exploration went a little bit farther as time went on. A reason that could be because as time went on more information about the dangers on the great plains were being exposed and people were learning of the danger before they went out on expeditions
