Film Review: Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights is the story of the Permian football team in Odessa, Texas. Odessa is a town that is obsessed with their football team. The team is expected to go undefeated and win the state championship. The season and the team are in jeopardy after the star player, Boobie Miles, is injured during a game, and the team loses the next game. Coach Gaines' job relies on the team making it to the playoffs. Permian makes it to the playoffs after a tie-breaking coin toss. Permian loses in the finals, but some players come to realize the success they achieved after the hardships of the season.

I think the movie is a good representation of what life is like in a small town. Football and other high school sports are really important. On game night, businesses close, and everyone is at the game. The football players and coaches are like celebrities in these towns. I think sports are important to many people in small towns because it is seen as a way to get out of their town. When Boobie realized that he couldn't play football after his knee injury, he broke down because he realized that football was probably the best opportunity for him to live a successful life out of Odessa. As important as football was to the people of Odessa, they get over losses and look to next year.
