I played Fargo Post 2 baseball for 4 years so I am very familiar with Roger Maris. He actually played for Fargo Post 2 and his number is retired. I always knew that there was a museum in the West acres mall, but I never stopped to actually look. I thought I knew just about everything about him so I really did not think it was worth my time to stop and look. Roger Maris was number 9 and made his name playing for the New York Yankees. He was a right fielder and he batted left handed. In the year 1961, Roger and Mickey Mantle had a huge season. They were both trying to break Babe Ruth's great home run record. In 1961 Roger did break Babe Ruth's record but that season they actually started a new rule and had 9 extra games I believe. Roger did not break the record in the same amount of games that Ruth had so for a long time they put an asterisk by his name. Until recently he was the home run record holders for many years. I think that the recent people that broke it are on performance enhancers so they cheated, but that is a whole other subject. It was actually today December 11, 2008 that I decided to visit this museum. The museum is really small compared to what you expect. In the museum are all Roger's old uniforms, trophies, and anything else that they could get from his house when he past away. The cool thing about this museum is they have a little movie theater with the old Yankee stadium seats. The movie is a little documentary on Roger's life. Roger made a name for this city of Fargo. Not to many people are famous from the Great plains let alone North Dakota. Roger Maris is a name that will live on forever because of this museum and what he did during his baseball career. Like a big thing he put Fargo and North Dakota on the Map. This museum in the mall is small and does not have a lot of information about him. The museum does have a lot of cool artifacts but if some one wanted to know a little more about Roger they would have to find it out some where else. I would recommend anyone interested in baseball or a legend to come visit this museum and learn a little about the great home run king Roger Maris. Another note there is a movie called 61 which is about his career as a Yankee which is really good and a must see.
