Last night I finished Season One of the television show Corner Gas. Corner Gas is a Canadian television show created by Brent Butt. The show is about the small town of Dog River in
Saskatchewan, and the nothings that take place in the little town on the Plains. The show has a total of eight characters- all Dog River locals. Brent Butt stars as the Corner Gas owner and main character. The entire season is about the happenings of Dog River and
especially Corner Gas. The show is slow moving and pretty boring but very accurate of a town on the Plains.
The little town gets worked up over the re-opening of the local coffee shop- its new colored walls, different salt and pepper shakers and the 25 cent increase on coffee was to big of a change for the town. In both the television show and real life on the Plains people don't like change. The upset locals, confusion and frustration of the change gives a perfect example of life on the Plains- especially in smaller towns. The part I found most interesting and funny was about half way through the season. Dog River decided that they needed to have more people moving through the town- more tourist. The decided to make the world's biggest gardening hoe. We just cover the "World's largest" presentation and discussed the subject. I find it funny and a bit weird that here on the Plains we find the need to create something that could be called the World's Larger- just to put us on the map.
Gas Corner was slow moving and relatively boring except for its select
humorous parts. It did a wonderful job at show life on the Plains but didn't keep me interested. I would be surprised if it made it past the first season.
