Thursday morning I visited the Plains Art Museum here in Fargo. The Museum is located downtown in a large warehouse. The second Thursday and fourth Thursday of each month there is free admission- which is why I went Thursday, not realizing that students are free with their student I.D. After the visit I went home and did a little research online about the museum. In 1965 the Museum was located in the Moorhead Post Office and was called the Red River Art Center. In 1975 the name was changed from the Red River Art Center to the Plains Art Museum. In 1997 the Art Museum was moved from Moorhead to the location it is at now here in Fargo. The Museum has over 3,000 pieces of art in it permanent and twelve special exhibit each year. Some of the special exhibits include The Colors of Pastel Work by Sandi Dahl, Extraordinarily Local by local artists Ross Hilgers, Robert Kurkoski, Will Shynkaruk, and David Swenson, and Pulp Function by the Jane L. Stern Gallery. I personally like the art work of the local artists- the contemporary ceramic work in Innovation and Change. Much of the permanent artwork that the Museum has is national and regional contemporary artwork, the Traditional Native American artwork, and Traditional Folk art. Todd H. Strand and William Wegman were my personal favorites- both did photography. Strand took pictures of North Dakota and North Dakota people.
I had a lot of fun at the Plains Art Museum and would recommend everyone to go. It is beautiful, unique and a great way to see the talents of people here on the Plains.
