RP Heritage Site

On Thursday after class I had some time to kill so I went and visited the Roger Maris museum out at West Acres and although I have seen it before I still find it interesting to visit simply because of his accomplishments and what they mean to the area. I enjoyed the visit because although I have been to the mall countless times I usually try and get in and out and do not usually make down to that end of the mall. Also it gave me the chance to learn more things about the museum that I had overlooked in the past like the history of the thing that usually tends to be overshadowed by all of the lights, pictures, and awards in the case. The two most important things that I had overlooked before was that the museum was put up in 1984 and developed by Jim McLaughlin and also that Roger did not really want a museum unless it was something that anyone could see for free. I also learned that the museum had been redone in 2003 and although I had realized there were some changes to it since the last time I visited I did not realize that it was redone and they had a re dedication ceremony. The museum has many Maris artifacts like jerseys, bats, awards, pictures, and even his old locker. It also has a room to watch video and supposedly the seats are from Yankee stadium during his playing days. When I asked others viewing the museum what they thought about it many of them felt the same way. Most people liked it but had seen it before and it was not a huge deal to them however the an older guy I talked to thought it was great and said "this is what people from this area are all about." Basically what he meant was that people from here are hard working and when they put their minds to it they can accomplish anything and flourish in any environment and I tended to agree with him. I feel that Roger is a good representation of people of the area because we are hard workers here. That hard work mentality is out of necessity for our survival and without it this part of the country would probably be empty and not many other people have reflected that attitude in the public spotlight like Roger Maris.
