Site Reconnaissance

Guidelines for the Ghost Town Initiative

Every author is expected to visit and inspect the site of the ghost town being treated.  Mapping and photographic documentation will be important functions of the site visit.  It may be useful, too, to bring local informants to the site to guide and to reminiscence.  In all cases, site reconnaissance should produce, in addition to photographic images, the following elements.

·        Field notes describing the physical location and circumstances of the ghost town.

·        Inventory and description of physical features remaining at the site.  Here’s a form to use for recording key features.

·        A map, based on a USGS quad map portion, situating the town and locating its key features.  Prof. Isern will provide the base map on which to make notations.
