Registration for
Grassroots History
The seminar is asynchronic, which is to say, it is always in session. Individual enrollees are at different points of progress in their work. We operate within the framework of semester calendars, but I am aware of the realities of time management for in-service professionals. So, if you anticipate any difficulty completing primary research and polished writing within one term, or if you would like to stretch the work across two terms, then visit with me about it, and we’ll decide how to handle your registration. In fact, it’s a good idea for anyone considering enrollment in Grassroots History to talk or correspond with me prior to enrollment, so we can see that we’re on the same page as to expectations. Why Are There Two Sections of the Course Listed in the Schedule? Good question. The answer is a matter of finance. Here’s the deal. · If you have a tuition waiver (that is, you are a graduate assistant at NDSU, or a PhD graduate assistant in History at UND, or have a tuition waiver for some other reason), then you should enroll in the section listed as regular resident instruction. · If you do not have a tuition waiver, then you should enroll in the section listed as web-based. Your tuition for the section designated as web-based is the same as regular, resident, in-state graduate tuition. Everything operational is the same for the two sections, and everyone works together via this website, but the two enrollment sections keep the finances straight. Any question about this, just ask me. How Do I Register,
Then? Registration is the same as for any other NDSU course. Just make sure you get into the right course and section, since the Distance & Continuing Education courses are listed right in with the others. The people who will find registration difficult, I’m sad to say, are those who are non-degree seeking students new to NDSU. Like other students, you will have to register via the information system known as Campus Connection. This begins with getting a user-ID and password and then takes you into a lot of other interfaces to get your registration done. What I recommend is, go to the Campus Connection page, here: http://www.ndsu.edu/ndsu/deott/registrar/connect/#userid Once you are there, call our Continuing Education office, tell the person who answers you are seeking to register for HIST 710 online, and ask the person to walk you through the registration. They are used to such questions and provide such assistance all the time. Admission to the Because this is a regular, 700-level graduate course, you can’t get in unless you have been admitted to the graduate school (or been admitted to the joint PhD program in History at UND). I know, this is a hassle for those who are not pursuing graduate degrees at NDSU, but we do try to minimize the difficulty. In the first place, if you’re planning on pursuing a graduate degree at NDSU, then why not go ahead and complete your application for admission? If you’re not, then here’s what you do. Apply for admission to the NDSU graduate school as a non-degree student. Since there are no instructions how to do this at the graduate school website, print this page and use it for reference. Here are instructions for applying for admission with non-degree status. 1. Begin at the login page for applications, here: https://apply.embark.com/grad/ndsu/13/ 2. Create an account for your application. (You can use any password you want, so long as it has four or more characters.) 3. Once you’re logged in, you’ll face a page called Preliminary Questions. In this form, be sure to select Non-Degree Status from the drop-down list of programs. 4. Next you’ll arrive at the home page for NDSU graduate admissions. You can ignore most of the instructions here. You will not need to submit references or transcripts. All you have to do is fill out the online application form and make your payment for admission (currently $45). Now, at upper left, open the Application Form. 5. Fill out the application form. This extends to two web pages. It’s a lot of material, but fill it out. If you lack some information, you can save what you have, look up what you need, and return to complete. 6. At the bottom of the second page, don’t go to Supplemental Forms, because you don’t need those. Instead go back to upper left and select Submit Application. 7. This will lead to other prompts—to something called Application Inspector, and eventually to another submission prompt, but keep going, you’re on the home stretch. 8. Finally the prompts will lead you to a payment page, where you can pay by credit card. 9. Once you’re admitted as a non-degree student, you can enroll. See instructions for registration above.
