The BS in History + History Education at NDSU

This is a degree for the prospective teacher of History or social studies in the secondary schools. My advisees pursue History as first major and History Education as second major.  (This involves no additional hours for completion of the two majors simultaneously.)

If you are a prospective teacher, then in all matters of major requirements (work specifically in History) or general education, follow my guidelines posted in this website, not those posted by the Teacher Education program.  In general, work with me (and this degree sheet) as to course requirements, and with the School of Education as to the process of teacher education.

The History requirements are summarized in the table below.

Course Work in Education

Although you are advised in the Department of History, your professional preparation as a teacher is the mission of the School of Education, which is in another college.  You need to familiarize yourself with the program in Teacher Education, including the Requirements Checklist.  Use that to guide your work specifically in Education.

You have a substantial body of work in Education to complete for this professional degree, and for the portion of this work at the 400 level, you have to be admitted to the School of Education. This is not automatic; you apply, and you have to have met certain criteria to get in. Students generally apply for admission to the School of Education late in the sophomore year or early in the junior year.

Second Social Science Field

To certify to teach in History in North Dakota you need also to take coursework in a second social science field: Political Science, Geography, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, or Psychology.  At least 6 hours in one of these, including at least 3 at 300- or 400-level.  More is better.

General Education

Complete your general education requirements, which include both university-wide and college requirements. My page on general education summarizes these for you.

Credit Hour Requirements for All Degrees

It takes 122 credit hours and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 to graduate. And don't forget the upper-division requirement: at least 37 of your credit hours have to be upper-division (300- or 400-level).
