How to Cite a Periodical Article

Let’s illustrate with an article I assign for reading in the Senior Seminar—Joyce Appleby’s essay from the AHR. The first citation of the article looks like this.

6. Joyce Appleby, “The Power of History,” American Historical Review 103 (February 1998): 1-14.

Now to parse out the elements in this first citation of an article.

Author, first name first, followed by a comma

Title of the article and a comma, all enclosed in quotes

Title of the journal or magazine, in italics

         Volume (an Arabic number)

Date of the issue, in parentheses, followed by a colon

         Page numbers

As with books, the subsequent citation of a periodical article can be shorter than the first. Here’s the description of the short citation form, followed by the application of it to the same journal article.

         Last name of the author

Title of the article, or if it is long, a shortened title

         Page numbers

10. Appleby, “The Power of History,” 13.
