How to Cite a Book On this page I'll illustrate the simpler principles for citation of books. To begin, let's say we used Ray Allen Billington's biography of Frederick Jackson Turner as the source for a paragraph of text, and this was the first time that particular book was cited in the paper. The note would look like this.
Notice these things about the citation above.
• First comes the author’s name, first name first, exactly as given on the title page, followed by a comma. • Then the title of the book—the full title with subtitle. • Next the publication data—city of publication, publisher, and year of publication—arranged and punctuated as indicated. • Finally, the page numbers. If, however, this was not the first time you cited the book in this paper, then the note would be different. Subsequent citations are shorter.
With subsequent citations of books, as the example above shows, you can do these things. • Use the last name only for author. • Use a short title for the book. • Omit the publication data. Now to wrap up with a multiple-citation note that cites two books—the same book as a subsequent citation, followed by another book as first citation, the two citations separated within the note by a semicolon.
