How to Cite a Newspaper

Citing a newspaper article is rather easy. The essential elements in a newspaper citation are

         Name of newspaper, in italics

         Date of issue

Ordinarily you do not need to provide the page number for a newspaper article.

Here is another wrinkle, however. If the article you are citing has a credited author and a title, such as a feature article, then you should recognize authorship by giving author and title first.

Here are examples of both types of newspaper citations.

14. Bismarck Tribune, October 22, 1998.

15. Justin Brown, “For West, a Balkan Boomerang?”, Christian Science Monitor, October 19, 1998.

To finish up, here’s an example of a multiple-citation note with several newspaper sources.

18. Los Angeles Times, October 25, 1998; Robert Marquand, "Poverty Inspires Nobel Work," Christian Science Monitor, October 19, 1998; Chris Allbritton, "Millenium Bug Could Hit Home," Fargo Forum, October 25, 1998; Jamestown Sun, October 27, 1998.
