Calling All History Students

Emily Eidsmoe, presdient of Phi Alpha Theta and History Club at NDSU, has sent out this notice.

"Hello History Club and Phi Alpha Theta members! The first meeting will be this Tuesday (August 29th) at 4:00 in Minard 407. Hope you all can make it and start off the year on the right foot."

Let me encourage all History students to get involved with History Club or Phi Alpha Theta and, if you can, attend this initial meeting of the year. My advice to any student is to get involved with two organizations, one in your major and one outside your major. If you're a History student, you definitely should be involved with History Club or Phi Alpha Theta.

Fall 2006

Greetings to all returning students! As you may have noticed, I'm not in the fall schedule, at least not for courses of resident instruction (I'm still doing some online courses). I'm taking some time off from the classroom this semester to work up new courses, retool old ones, do some extension work, and do some writing. Although I won't be keeping regular office hours, I'll be on campus most every day, and will be happy to meet with advisees or other students about any business we need to transact. Then I'll be back in the classroom as usual in January--offering a section of 104, my 382 Canada course, and, I expect, the senior seminar. Have a great term!

Wait Lists

The registrar provides these guidelines having to do with wait lists for classes.

1) When students attempt to register for a class that has reached its enrollment capacity, an "OK to Wait List?" check box will appear. Students may sign up for a course wait list by clicking on this feature. Students may see their order on the wait list.

2) If a seat becomes available in the class, non-wait listed students are not able to add this class via Campus Connection if a wait list already exists (unless provided departmental permission).

3) Students who elect to be wait-listed for a course are responsible for checking their Study List regularly through the first seven days of the semester to see if it has been added to their schedule of classes. IMPORTANT: Students are not automatically notified when added to a course via the Wait List.

4) Students who have Holds, Time Conflicts, or who have not met requirements to enroll in a course (ie: major or classification restriction) WILL NOT be added via the Wait list Process. However, they will remain on the wait list unless they drop themselves from it or until the wait list process quits running.

5) Students who no longer wish to be enrolled in a course that was added via the Wait List are responsible for dropping the course on Campus Connection according to the posted dates and deadlines, available at http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndsu/deott/dates/dates071.shtml.

6) After August 29th, the Wait List process will no longer run and students not accommodated through this process may check with the appropriate academic departments on obtaining a Class Permission to enroll.

7) The Campus Connection Wait List feature is not functional for the following subjects: AGEC, ECON.

The Spielmeister @ Bonanzaville

Matt Sielman volunteered this summer to do a little historical interpretation at Bonanazaville, West Fargo, portraying the political iconoclast Henry Martinson in his cabin on the Bonanzaville grounds. Matt writes,

"For Pioneer Days, I was a historical interpreter and I took the part of Henry Martinson. My duties were to explain to the visitors who Henry Martinson was and how his lake home was special to him. I also was put on the "Wanted" poster for the kids and so the kids had to find me and if they got all the signatures then they received free popcorn, so I had kids hunting for me the two days. This experience allowed me to see how much fun it was to step into the character of an historical figure and reaffirm my belief that if you take students and kids to Pioneer Days, they can get an appreciation of how hard it was for the people of that time."

Sounds like a good experience all around!
