Important Health Information
Health Insurance
Health care in the United States is expensive and the individual is responsible for paying the medical costs. The government does not pay for it. For this reason, all international students studying in North Dakota are required to purchase the North Dakota State mandated health insurance policy. Having health insurance protects the individual by helping pay the medical expenses if he/she should become ill or be involved in an accident.
The North Dakota state-mandated health insurance policy for international students is provided by BlueCross BlueShield of North Dakota (BCBS). Please note that NDSU is unable to waive or substitute for other policies due to this state of North Dakota requirement.
Please click here for more detailed information on international student health insurance.
New students: Health insurance coverage begins on August 1st for Fall arrivals and December 1st for Spring. Please do not plan your arrival before these dates, in the event that you arrive here and become ill before your insurance coverage starts. Your health insurance will be charged to your account upon registration at the end of orientation.
All international students must pay their health insurance charge no later than February 13, 2013. Failure to pay this charge by February 13th will result in the cancellation of your spring semester 2013 registration. This is a very serious consequence which would result in your required departure from the United States.

Immunizations
NDSU is a campus that strives to create an environment which supports student health and wellness. As a condition of enrollment, the State Board of Higher Education requires that all international students coming from countries where tuberculosis (TB) is endemic be tested. TB testing will be conducted during the New International Student Orientation. This initial testing will cost approximately $15.00 and will be charged to your NDSU account. If the test is returned as a positive, you will then need to have an x-ray that will be covered by the international student health insurance outline above. More information about this requirement is located in the admission pacakge you received from the Office of International Programs.
Students must also provide a record of two (2) doses of Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine with them. Please complete the yellow MMR form provided in your admission and orientation package and bring with you to registration.
Do not send vaccination records or copies of records as they will not be stored, nor will they be available for transfer. The proof of vaccination must be recorded on the reverse side of this form by your health care provider.
Students who have been admitted to NDSU are asked to submit their vaccination information prior to their first registration. You may obtain the form at the Student Health Service office and turn it in at orientation.
- A hold may be placed on your registration attempt for any of the following reasons:
- You have not submitted any record of MMR vaccination.
- You need a second dose of MMR prior to registration. (Wait 31 days between doses).
- You received a dose of MMR before age one (1).
- You had your vaccination prior to 1970.
- The proof sent was not signed by a physician/nurse/public health representative or was not an official school record.
- Immunity for Rubella (German Measles) must be proven by laboratory titer in the absence of vaccination.
- Documented medical conditions such as a febrile illness, pregnancy, or certain allergies exist.
- The second MMR will be received within one month following enrollment.
- Religious beliefs preclude participation in a vaccination program.
Exception for this requirements are granted when:
NOTE: Federal law prohibits us from requesting medical information for you.
