African Soul, American Heart - a documentary
Kevin Brooks, writer and producer, and Joseph Akol Makeer

African Soul, American Heart is a documentary film that follows Joseph Akol Makeer, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, as he returns home for the first time in 20 years. The film retraces some of Joseph's journey and includes interviews with United Nations officials, clergy, and orphans. Through conversations with these people, Joseph tries to raise awareness of the challenges facing Sudanese villagers as they reclaim their way of life. The film ends with Joseph's plan to build a boarding facility where orphans will be fed, clothed, and nurtured, while encouraging their active participation in village life. His dream is that these children are raised "to the level of the rest of the world." This screening will be preceded by a short overview of Sudan's history and Joseph's life. A question and answer period will follow the film.

"A Visit to a Sister Land-Grant Institution in Bolivia"
James J. Garrett, Ph.D., Candeska Cikana Community College, Fort Totten, ND

Maintaining a strong sense of community and connectedness to the earth are two values often associated with Indigenous cultures. In a developing region of Bolivia, Carmen Pampas University was built upon a type of U.S. land-grant university model. Though a world apart, Cankdeska Cikana Community College in Fort Totten, N.D., and Carmen Pampas University share many of these values and other similarities. Garrett will compare these two developing land-grant institutions and the experiences they share.

Dr. James Garrett is vice president of the Land Grant Program, at Candeska Cikana Community College in Fort Totten, ND.
