United Kingdom

A valid passport is required for U.S. citizens to enter and exit the United Kingdom. As of September 1, 2007, visiting students are required to have one of the two types of UK student visas:

1. Student Visitor Visa

  • Student Visitor Visas are issued at the port of entry upon arrival in the UK, and allow students to study for a maximum of six months.
  • Students cannot participate in internships or paid employment.
  • Applying for extensions while studying in the UK will not be possible. If a student is undecided about studying for an entire academic year, he/she should apply for the yearlong Student Visas/Prior Entry Clearance.
  • Students will be required to provide the immigration letter from the host university.
  • The first time students entering the UK they must show proof of a round trip ticket.

2. Student Visas/Prior Entry Clearance

If you have any possibility of extending your stay or wish to pursue part-time employment, it is highly advised to obtain the advance Student Visa/Entry Clearance.

Students will be required to apply for a Student Visas/Prior Entry Clearance if:

  • Length of stay is 6 months or more
  • Participating in paid employment in the UK.

Although it is very unlikely, immigration officials may require that you undergo an impromptu medical exam at the airport upon arrival in the United Kingdom. This exam may include a chest x-ray. You can bring a doctor's report with you, but a doctor's report may not be sufficient to waive the airport medical exam.

If students enter the UK via the Channel Islands, the Isle of Mann, Northern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, they will not get an entry clearance stamp in their visa and will have to pay approximately £300 to obtain one after entering. Students should fly into mainland UK first, not via one of these destinations.

Registering with the local police

If you are staying for more than six months, you must register with your local police department. This is a requirement, and there is a fee.

What is an Entry Clearance?

This is a document issued to travelers to have been granted leave to enter the UK. It will be in the form of a vignette or sticker placed in a passport at a visa issuing post. In the US, the issuing posts are located at the British Consulates General in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

Who needs Entry Clearance?

All US nationals entering the UK as students or work permit holders and wishing to stay for six months or longer, must apply for Entry Clearance. If studying in the UK for one semester (less than 6 months), Entry Clearance is not required.
