A valid passport is required for U.S. citizens to enter and exit the United Kingdom. As of September 1, 2007, visiting students are required to have one of the two types of UK student visas:
1. Student Visitor Visa
2. Student Visas/Prior Entry Clearance
If you have any possibility of extending your stay or wish to
pursue part-time employment, it is highly advised to
obtain the advance Student Visa/Entry Clearance.
Students will be required to apply for a Student
Visas/Prior Entry Clearance if:
Although it is very unlikely, immigration officials may require
that you undergo an impromptu medical exam at the airport upon
arrival in the United Kingdom. This exam may include a chest x-ray.
You can bring a doctor's report with you, but a doctor's report may
not be sufficient to waive the airport medical exam.
If students enter the UK via the Channel Islands, the Isle of Mann,
Northern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, they will not get an
entry clearance stamp in their visa and will have to pay
approximately £300 to obtain one after entering. Students should
fly into mainland UK first, not via one of these destinations.
Registering with the local police
If you are staying for more than six months, you must register with your local police department. This is a requirement, and there is a fee.
