LIVING AND STUDYING AT NDSU

Can I study part-time?

No. F-1 non-immigrant students are required to be registered as full-time students each term to properly maintain their immigration status in the United States. Other non-immigrants may have different requirements for credit loads. Contact the Office of International Programs for more information.

Can I pay my tuition by credit card?

Yes. The NDSU Bison Connection or Customer Account Services Office accepts the following major credit cards: MasterCard, American Express and Discover. You may also pay by personal check or bank draft made payable to North Dakota State University.

Am I required to purchase the university health insurance?

Yes. All non-immigrant international students are required to purchase university approved health insurance. This plan is provided through NDSU. Your student account will be charged each year for health insurance coverage. This requirement cannot be waived for non-immigrant international students.

Are there medical services provided on-campus?

Yes, NDSU has a Student Health Service. Care is available Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The NDSU Student Health Center has a physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurses, a pharmacist, and a medical technologist on staff. Visits to the Student Health Service are free to NDSU students.

When do courses start?

Courses start each January for spring semester and each August for fall semester.

Can I work on-campus?

Yes. F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant international students are allowed to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters. During the summer, winter and spring breaks, F-1 and J-1 students can work on-campus up to 40 hours per week.

Can I change my major field of study after I arrive at NDSU?

Yes. It is not uncommon for students to change majors after they arrive.

How many student organizations are available on-campus?

There are more than 200 recognized student organizations at NDSU.

Can international students remain in the residence halls on-campus during the semester break (between fall and spring semester)?

Yes. However, you must complete the appropriate form and submit it to the NDSU Residence Life Office in order to receive approval for staying on-campus during those times. Since contract rates do not cover break periods, you will be charged $10 USD per night during that period.

Where is the Office of International Programs located? What are the hours of operation?

The Office of International Programs is located in Memorial Union, Room 116. From August - May, the office is open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. From May - August, the office is open from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
