Upgrading to Internet Explorer 9

Internet Explorer 9 has been released and is currently available for download from Microsoft's Web site.

We strongly recommend that you check with your department for any specialty software that may not be IE9 compatible. (If you need to remove IE9, see the section below How Do I Remove IE9 If I Have Problems?)

Who does this affect?

This upgrade is only available for Windows Vista and Windows 7. 

This upgrade is NOT available for the Macintosh OS, but individuals who are running newer versions of Windows on their Macintosh computers (with Parallels or BootCamp) should also consider the upgrade.

When should I upgrade?

The Division of IT is recommending that you install IE9 at this time. The Division of IT is currently deploying the update through WSUS.

How does the upgrade work?

You can go to the Microsoft Web site and download IE9 -- read this document carefully before you make the decision to upgrade.

Some computers use the North Dakota University System update server (known as WSUS) to receive and install Windows updates. The upgrade to IE9 is currently being deployed through the WSUS server.

Individuals may use Microsoft's public update server to download and install updates.

How can I prevent the upgrade?

If you are supported by Desktop Support, or using the University System WSUS server to obtain your updates, please call the NDSU Helpdesk and request not to have IE9 installed. You will need to provide the "Computer Name" of your computer, or the computers that you do not want the update to be installed on. ITS will set a special flag for your computer on the WSUS server that should prevent the deployment of IE9.

** To find the Computer Name - Click - Start - right click Computer and click Properties, the computer name is listed.

 

Machines not using the University System WSUS should login to the Software Download page and save the IE9 Blocker to your desktop, then double click and accept the registry changes. To undo the changes above, please login again and download the IE9 Unblocker.

How do I remove IE9 if I have problems?

If you experience difficulties and need to remove IE8, follow these instructions:

For Windows Vista/7 :

  • Click the Start globe and then click Control Panel.
  • Click Programs and Features.
  • Click View installed updates.
  • Click Windows Internet Explorer 9, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.
  • Click one of the following:
    • Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 9, and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).
    • Restart later (to wait until you shut down or restart your computer).
