Managing pop-up windows
Block pop-up windows
Most modern browsers automatically block pop-up windows, which saves comptuer users a headache from closing annoying advertisements. However, some pop-up windows may be necessary to complete tasks on the Internet.
Following are instructions on blocking and un-blocking pop-up windows in your browser.
Block in Internet Explorer 7
- Go to Tools > Internet Options
- Click the Privacy tab
- Check the "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" box, near the bottom of the configuration window
- To adjust the settings, click the Settings button and click the Close button when complete
- Click the OK button to close the Internet Options window
Block in Windows Firefox
- Go to Tools > Options
- Go to the Content tab (the globe)
- Check the "Block pop-up windows" check box
- Click the Close button
Block in Macintosh Firefox
- Go to the Firefox > Preferences menu
- Go to the Content tab (the globe)
- Check the "Block pop-up windows" check box
- Click the Close button
Block in Safari
Pop-ups cannot be blocked/unblocked per-site in Safari: pop-ups are either blocked or they are not. To block pop-ups:
- Click the Safari menu
- Click the "Block Pop-Up Windows" option to check it

Allow pop-up windows when you need them
Allow in Internet Explorer 7
- If Internet Explorer 7 blocks a pop-up window, a pale yellow information bar will appear at the top of the web page display area just under the address bar. See the graphic below that shows the "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options click here ..." message

- Left-click the pale yellow information bar to display a menu of options, shown in the following graphic

- To allow pop-ups until the next time you visit a web site, select "Temporarily Allow Pop-ups." If you frequently visit a web site, "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site..." may be recommended; choose this only for sites you trust
- You may need to click the Refresh button or re-click a link to view the pop-up window that Internet Explorer previously blocked
Allow in Firefox
- If Firefox blocks a pop-up window, a pale yellow bar will appear at the top of the web page display area just under the address bar. See the graphic below that shows the "Firefox prevented this site from opening a popup window" message

- Click the Preferences button to display a menu of options, shown in the following graphic

- To display the current pop-up only, select "Show http:// [URL]... ." If you frequently visit a web site, "Allow popups for [URL]" may be recommended; choose this only for sites you trust
- You may need to click the Refresh button or re-click a link to view the pop-up window that Firefox previously blocked
Allow in Safari
Safari does not provide any audial or visual message indicating that a pop-up window was blocked. Also, pop-ups cannot be blocked/unblocked per-site in Safari: pop-ups are either blocked or they are not. To allow pop-ups:
- Click the Safari menu
- Click the "Block Pop-Up Windows" option to un-check it
