Enabling File Transfer on an off-campus workstation after installing VisrusScan version 8
Assumption: You have downloaded version 8 of VirusScan, and now cannot use FTP / Dreamweaver / Contribute to transfer files from an off- or on-campus workstation to the web server.
From your desktop:
Step 1: Go to Start > All Programs > Network Associates > VirusScan Console
Step 2: In the window that opens, choose VirusScan Console
Step 3: In the VirusScan Console, double-click Access Protection
Step 4: In the Access Protection Properties window, verify that Prevent FTP Inbound and Prevent FTP Outbound are not checked. Since they default as checked, you probably need to uncheck them
Step 5: Click Apply and OK at the bottom of the window. FTP transfers should now work. If not, please contact the Help Desk (231-8685) for further assistance.
Note: these settings sometimes revert after restarting your computer. If this happens to you, uninstall VirusScan and then download and install it again from the ITS Software Download page.
Transferring documents and media to the NDSU Web Server
Windows Instructions for Faculty and Staff
After you have requested an account, prepared your HTML documents and tested them on your workstation, follow these instructions to transfer the files to the NDSU server.
1. Start the WS-FTP utility. If you do not have WS-FTP, visit the ITS Help Desk to find out where you can acquire the software. The Help Desk (231-8685) can also answer any questions or problems that may occur during installation.
2. The first time you access the web server through FTP, create a connection profile by clicking on NEW and filling the choices as shown below.
| Your "Host Name" will be webdev.ndsu.nodak.edu and your login / password will be what you use for your NDSU-based email. With your NDSU email login (firstname.lastname@ndsu.edu) you receive a shorter 8-character login called an IID. You may use either the "firstname.lastname" ID or the shorter IID as the User ID here. Choose "OK" again to connect. |
To transfer your PC files to the Web:
Now that you have connected to the server, you are ready to transfer your files. The left side of the transfer window ("Local System") displays your PC system and its drives, folders and files. The right side of the window displays your web account's folders and files. To get to your web server account space, double-click on the "Web" or "NDSU_Web" folder. All web pages must go within this folder. You need to create a folder structure on "Web" that will serve you well - probably similar to your folder structure on your PC. To do this, use the MkDir button on the right and type the name of the folder. To move into a folder, double-click on it from the folder list. Double-clicking on the ". ." choice at the beginning of the list backs up one level in the folder structure. Use the RmDir to remove or delete folders. |
|
NOTE: The folders listed on the left side of the "local/remote" window work in the same way. You can use MkDir, ChgDir and RmDir buttons on the PC side, too.
Once you get into the correct PC folder on the left side of the window and into the appropriate Web folder on the right side of the window, you can start transferring files.
To transfer the files:
1. To transfer one file, highlight the PC filename and click on the arrow button that points in the right direction. Upper and lower case matters on the hosts and the web, so you might have broken links if you are inconsistent.
As you transfer files, you should see any new files start to populate the filename list on the right side of the screen. You can replace existing web files by transferring new copies over the top of the old copies.
2. To transfer more than one file, you can do one of two things.
To transfer a whole list of files, highlight the first filename. Then move your mouse down to the last filename, hold down the Shift key and click once on the last file to be transferred. This selects all the files between these two files to be highlighted. Then click on the arrow button to transfer.
To transfer multiple, interspersed files from a list, highlight the first filename. Then hold down the Ctrl key and click on any other filename(s) that you wish to select. Then click on the arrow button to transfer.
Note: Graphic files (gif's and jpg's) can be stored separately in an image directory, but you must make sure that you reference them correctly in your html documents. Graphics files must be transferred as Binary. HTML files can be transferred as either Binary or Text. (See the choice at the bottom of the WS_FTP window.)
3. Once you are finished transferring the files, you can use the View, Rename, Delete, and Refresh buttons as needed to do some basic maintenance on the web files.
To finish your Web Server session:
Choose Exit at the bottom of the window.
So what is the web address to my documents on the NDSU server?
Your web address will be http://www.ndsu.edu/ndsu/your_login/ where "your_login" is your "IID" email/web login. The login would be no more than 8 characters long. If you don't know what your IID login is, go to http://enroll.nodak.edu, answer the prompts until you get to the information page, and find your IID listed there.
If your web account is for instructional purposes, and was created prior to 12.98, you may be under "instruct" instead of "ndsu", so your web address would be located at www.ndsu.edu/instruct/your_login/ instead
