NDSU
Anti-Virus Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What anti-virus solution is currently in use at NDSU?

A:   NDSU is currently transitioning from McAfee VirusScan Enterprise to Microsoft Forefront / Security Essentials for Windows PCs.  Forefront can be installed only on NDSU owned systems, Security Essentials is free for personal computers.

For Macintosh systems running OS X, we are transitioning from McAfee to ClamXav.  ClamXav is free and legal to install on both personal and NDSU owned computers.

McAfee is no longer being distributed by NDSU.

Here is the migration timeline:  http://www.ndsu.edu/its/help_desk/desktop_support_hub/av/migration/

Q:   What is the difference between Forefront and Security Essentials?

A:   Forefront is a corporate anti-virus solution that offers the ability to be centrally managed.  It can only be installed on NDSU-owned systems.  Security Essentials is the free home version of Forefront.  It can only be installed on personal (non-business) systems and does not contain the business management features of Forefront.

Q:   Why is my Forefront icon orange instead of green?

A:   The Forefront icon will appear orange if it either needs to be updated or a scan has not been run in the last week.  To find out which it is, double click on the Forefront icon in the system tray to open the control panel.  Forefront will display the issue prominently across the main page and provide you an option to resolve the issue.

Q:   How do I make sure my computer will automatically scan each week?

A:   Double click on the Forefront icon in the system tray to open the Forefront control panel.  In there, select 'Settings' and make sure your scheduled scan is enabled.  We also recommend you set the scan type to Full and change the date and time to Wednesdays at 12 PM.

Q:   I somehow turned off real-time protection, how do I turn it on again?

A:   Double click the Forefront icon in the system tray to open the Forefront control panel.  On the main screen, whenever real-time protection is disabled, you will see a large red button that says 'Turn on'.  Click this button to re-enable real-time protection.

Q:   How do I do an on-demand scan?

A:   Double click the Forefront icon in the system tray to open the Forefront control panel.  On the right hand side of the main screen you will have options for a quick, full, or custom scan.  Select the type you need and click the 'Scan now' button below them.
