Registering Game Consoles
Registration is simple. Go to https://netreg.ndsu.nodak.edu/gamebox.html
- Enter your e-ID
- Enter in the type of game console you have (e.g., Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Gamecube, Wii).
- Enter the game console's MAC address. You can find directions to get this by going to https://netreg.ndsu.nodak.edu/machelp.html . (In this case, MAC stands for "Media Access Control," not Macintosh. All computers and networked devices have a MAC address.)
- Read the Acceptable Network Usage Policy in its entirety.
- Click Accept.
NOTE: Game consoles must be connected to the network using a network cable plugged directly into the wall jack. Game consoles will not work with the wireless network on campus.
NOTE: Any problems related to game consoles need to be directed to the manufacturer of the console. NDSU only supports the registration of game consoles on the network, not the devices themselves.
Bandwidth Restrictions
NDSU receives Internet access from STAGEnet, the State of North Dakota's data network. The bandwidth provided by the state is a shared resource; therefore, NDSU is charged for exceeding its bandwidth limit.
To prevent these fees, NDSU limits bandwidth use of some programs and gives priority to mission-critical applications.
To make sure that all ResNet users have equal access to the network, the following bandwidth policies have been put in place:
- During peak bandwidth usage (6 a.m. to 2 a.m.) you will have a bandwidth limit of 5GB per day for off-campus traffic to and from your computer.
- During off-peak hours (2 a.m. to 6 a.m.) all restrictions are lessened. If you have any large files that need to be downloaded (which are required for homework and/or research related to NDSU), we recommend that you do it between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. All quotas are reset daily at 6 a.m.
- The quota does not affect on-campus traffic such as checking Blackboard.
- Quotas are tracked according to your e-ID. Thus, if you have more than one computer registered on the network and you go over your quota, your bandwidth will be restricted to all computer registered to your e-ID.
- If you exceed your quota, you may continue to use the network. However, your bandwidth usage will be severely restricted for the next day. If you do not exceed the quota during day two, the restriction will be lessened the following day. Two days after you exceed your quota and if you have not exceeded your quota again, the restrictions will be removed.
If at any time during this period you exceed your quota again, you will return to the severely restricted bandwidth pool. For more information, see the ResNet website at: www.ndsu.edu/pubweb/resnet.
NOTE: The average person only uses about 100MB a day of off-campus traffic.
Wireless Router Information
NDSU provides secure wireless Internet access in most public areas across campus. In residence halls, wireless access is now available in student rooms.
Setting up personal wireless routers in residence halls (or anywhere else on campus) is prohibited.
Unauthorized wireless routers make the NDSU network vulnerable to attack and installing one can have serious university, financial, and legal consequences for the person who sets it up. If you set up a personal wireless router, it is ties to your name. If anyone else (a roommate, another hall resident or a stranger) uses the wireless network with your router, you are legally responsible for that person's online actions.
