Users asked to set passwords for new file sharing and computer login system
Published: 23 February 2012 03:26 PM

To prepare for an upcoming migration, NDSU students, faculty and staff must set their passwords in the new system by March 1.

NDSU will soon replace Novell with a new system for sharing files and logging in to campus computers, including cluster computers. To prepare for this campuswide migration, NDSU students, faculty and staff must set their passwords in the new system by March 1.

Typically this task is completed by logging in to the Enroll system to change a password. However, Blackboard temporarily has been configured to synchronize passwords so that users are not required to change their password.

The IT Division recommends that users log in to their Blackboard accounts using their NDSU electronic ID and password at least once before March 1 to prevent interruption to their IT services. All students, faculty and staff must perform this step even if they are not regular Blackboard users.

Once you have successfully logged in to Blackboard, your password automatically will synchronize in the new system. You can then log out of Blackboard, as no further action is required.

During the migration, the Novell file sharing system used by employees and students to access shared files and campus computers will be replaced by the more cost-efficient Windows File Services option. The migration will reduce costs for the university by approximately $70,000 annually, while enabling the IT Division to continue to provide reliable systems and services for NDSU.

The IT Division estimates that the migration to Windows File Services will begin mid-March and will be completed by the end of fall semester.

More information about the migration and the specific timeline will be forthcoming.
